Finding Inspiration

With Italian cooking being my forte, it might come as a surprise to find me deep into Asian cuisine. Yet, the beautiful path to discovering world flavors is a never-ending journey that every food lover should embark upon. And my narrative was given a whole new chapter by Chef Maangchi, recognized worldwide for her Korean cooking prowess. Her exceptional grilling skills, combined with an understanding of bold Korean flavors, were the catalyst behind this mouth-watering Grilled Sirloin Steak recipe.

Getting Into The Vibes

The beauty of this recipe doesn’t just lie in the succulent sirloin steak, although that’s a huge part of it. It’s the unique fusion of flavors that creates a symphony in your mouth. And while the crafting of this dish may reflect Korean traditions, the hearty satisfaction it delivers is universal, reminding me of the well-loved steak pizzaiola from the Italian kitchen.

The magic is in the marinade, where soy sauce meets brown sugar, sesame oil dances with fresh ginger, and a beautiful symphony is created with the addition of garlic and green onions. The play of sweet, savory, and a lovely hint of spice is enough to win any carnivore’s heart!

Perfect Pairings

As with most meals, the right accompaniment can turn a great dish into a spectacular feast. The flavors of Grilled Sirloin Steak match incredibly well with a side of kimchi fried rice, bringing an extra layer of complexity and zest. And if you’re like me and enjoy a good wine pairing, a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec works absolutely wonderfully.

So here it is, folks, a bit of South Korea on your plate. A recipe that not only feeds your belly, but also your adventurous spirit and your appreciation for global flavors. Try your hand at this Grilled Sirloin Steak, and I promise, you’ll fall in love just as I did.

What You’ll Need

  • 3 lbs Sirloin steak
  • 1 cup of Soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup of Brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup of Sesame oil
  • 6 cloves of Garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of Fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 Green onions, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of Black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of Sesame seeds
  • 1 large Onion, sliced
ALLERGENS: Soy, Sesame

Method

Step One

Start by preparing your sirloin steak. Make sure it’s properly thawed (if it was frozen), and pat it dry using a paper towel.

Step Two

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of soy sauce, 1/3 cup of brown sugar, 1/4 cup of sesame oil, 6 cloves of garlic (minced), 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger (grated), and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Stir these ingredients well until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Step Three

Add the sirloin steak to the mixture in the bowl. Make sure that the steak is completely submerged in the mixture. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and let it marinate for at least 2 hours, or overnight in the refrigerator for best results.

Step Four

After the steak has marinated, preheat your grill to medium-high heat. While your grill is preheating, remove the steak from the marinade, and let it come to room temperature. Reserve the marinade for basting the steak while grilling.

Step Five

Grill the steak for approximately 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or until the desired level of doneness is achieved. Be sure to baste the steak frequently with the marinade for extra flavor.

Step Six

While the steak is grilling, heat a pan over medium heat, add a little sesame oil and saute the large sliced onion until it’s soft and caramelized.

Step Seven

When the steak is done, remove it from the grill and let it rest for at least 10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the steak.

Step Eight

While the steak is resting, toast 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds in a dry pan over medium heat, until they are golden brown and fragrant.

Step Nine

To serve, slice the steak against the grain. Garnish with the caramelized onions, chopped green onions, and toasted sesame seeds. Enjoy your delicious, homemade grilled sirloin steak!
