A Meld of Flavours and Cultures

The Grilled Tofu with Seabeans recipe perfectly symbolizes my keenness to try different flavors. As an avid food blogger, I had experienced the unique taste of grilled tofu from the bustling streets of Thailand to the quiet Zen gardens of Kyoto before I made it a staple in my kitchen. The addition of seabeans, a mineral-rich wild vegetable that grows along salt marshes, beaches and mangroves, lends a crunch, lending a pleasant contrast to the soft, airy tofu. Raised in the vibrant culture of Louisiana, I’ve always had a keen interest in marrying the robustness of Creole cuisines with subtle flavours of other cultures. This dish achieves that balance, while also blending my French heritage with a dash of Asian flair.

Grilled Tofu with Seabeans

Healthful Ingredients

What makes the Grilled Tofu with Seabeans recipe a virtuous choice is the healthy nature of its ingredients. Tofu, known for its high protein content, also serves as a good source of amino acids, iron, calcium, and other micronutrients that are vital for good health. Seabeans, seldom used but incredibly nutritious, are packed with a significant amount of vitamin A, vitamin C, and protein. Introducing them into your diet can add a bit of unique flavor while also fortifying it with essential nutrients. The garnishing of red bell pepper and red onion not only adds beautiful color and crunchiness but also brings in their well-documented health benefits.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups fresh seabean
  • 6 pieces of firm tofu (around 1 pound)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large lemon, juiced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 6 bamboo skewers, soaked in water for 20 minutes
ALLERGENS: Soy

Method

Step One

Begin by pre-soaking your bamboo skewers in water for at least 20 minutes. This will prevent them from burning while grilling.

Step Two

Next, take the 6 pieces of firm tofu and press them to remove most of the water. Be gentle so as not to break or smash the tofu. Cut the tofu into cubes if not already done so.

Step Three

In a bowl, combine the olive oil, lemon juice, soy sauce, minced ginger, minced garlic, and brown sugar. Stir all the ingredients together until they are well combined and the sugar has dissolved.

Step Four

Add the tofu to the marinade and ensure each piece is thoroughly coated. Let the tofu sit in the marinade for at least 30 minutes but the longer the better. This will give the tofu time to absorb all the wonderful flavors of the marinade.

Step Five

While your tofu is marinating, you can prepare the vegetables. Thinly slice the red bell pepper and red onion. Set these aside until you are ready to assemble the skewers.

Step Six

Get your grill ready. If you are using a gas grill, preheat it to medium-high heat. If you are using charcoal, get the coals glowing red with an even layer of grey ash over them.

Step Seven

Thread a piece of tofu onto a skewer, then add a red pepper slice, an onion slice and then a few seabeans. Repeat this pattern until all of your skewers are full.

Step Eight

Grill the skewers over the preheated grill for about 10 minutes, turning occasionally until the tofu is nicely browned and vegetables are tender.

Step Nine

Remove the skewers from the grill and season them with some salt and black pepper to taste. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
