The Inspiration Behind the Sauce

Growing up in Montana, my cooking has always been a melange of rancher’s finds and Native American traditions. When I stumbled upon the robust flavor of guava, it reminded me of the tart huckleberries of my home state – it was an exotic twist on the familiar. Selfishly, I wanted to create something that united these disparate culinary worlds and spoke to my own personal journey. And thus, the Guava BBQ sauce was born. Agile enough to drizzle over a grilled bison burger, yet sophisticated enough to enhance a perfectly seared venison steak. A bridge between my past and my present, and an ode to the culinary journey that I’ve traveled.

Health Benefits and Pairing Ideas

The Guava BBQ Sauce isn’t just an explosion of flavors, it’s also packed with essential nutrients. Guava is a rich source of vitamin C and fiber, as confirmed by the National Center for Biotechnological Information. It’s a great way to make sure your meals are not just delicious, but nutritious too. And the beauty of this sauce is in its versatility – pair it up with some grilled chicken, a rack of ribs, or simply use it as a dipping sauce for crispy potato wedges. If you’re a fan of the beloved Carolina-style BBQ, then you’re most definitely going to enjoy this sauce, as it shares the same inherent sweetness coupled with a tangy kick.

So go on, bring that exquisite burst of tropical flavor to your barbecues and Sunday roasts – I assure you this Guava BBQ Sauce will be a trailblazer in your culinary journey just the way it has been in mine!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 1/2 cups of ripe guava, peeled and seeded
  • 1 cup of ketchup
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of guava juice
  • 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon of Soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika
ALLERGENS: Soy

Method

Step One

Start by preparing your ingredients. You’ll need to peel and seed your ripe guavas to get 1 1/2 cups. Then mince your 3 garlic cloves and finely chop your small onion.

Step Two

Place the prepared guava, garlic and onions into a food processor or blender and process until you have a smooth puree. This will make sure your sauce has a smooth consistency.

Step Three

In a medium saucepan, combine the guava puree, and the remaining ingredients: 1 cup of ketchup, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of guava juice, 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons of lime juice, 1 tablespoon of Soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard, and the spices (1 teaspoon of ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika).

Step Four

Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring it occasionally and making sure all the ingredients are well combined.

Step Five

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 20 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly. This process will cluster all the flavors together to create a rich and distinctive guava BBQ sauce.

Step Six

Remove the BBQ sauce from the heat and let it cool down. Once it has cooled, your Guava BBQ Sauce is ready for use. You can use it as a marinade, glaze or dipping sauce.
