I must confess that my love of food, in particular, the fusion of flavors that living and working in the sunny valleys of California affords me, knows no bounds. I always find myself thrilled to share new recipes that capture the essence of my cooking style and origins. Today, I’m pleased to share with you the Holy Basil and Lemon Chicken, an aromatic, tangy and refreshing dish that truly appeals to my West Coast health-conscious sensibilities while still delivering the comfort of traditional American cuisine.
Discovering the Magic of Holy Basil
When I first stumbled upon Holy Basil or Tulsi, as it’s known in Hindu, I was utterly captivated. This isn’t only for its light and distinct aroma, but also for its host of health benefits. This super herb is not only a powerful antioxidant but it also supports the immune system, helps the body adapt to stress, and balances energy levels. It’s no wonder I simply have to find ways of incorporating it into my dishes.
And don’t let me start on lemons. From the moment you zest a lemon, it fills the kitchen with such brightness that it invigorates your senses. Add in the lip-smacking tanginess and stack of health benefits including a rich source of vitamin C and aiding digestion, it immediately became clear that a fusion with Holy Basil was destined.
Paying Homage to the Classics with a Twist
This dish is reminiscent of a classic lemon chicken recipe, but the addition of Holy Basil takes it to a new level of sophistication and freshness. The hint of sweetness from the honey perfectly balances out the acidity of the lemon, while the holy basil imbues the dish with an earthy, peppery flavor. It’s simply a meal that speaks to all the senses!
Beyond the sensory delights, one thing I love about this dish is how easily it pairs with an array of side dishes. It’s splendid served over a bed of freshly-steamed brown rice for a warm, hearty dinner. Want to switch things up a bit? An accompanying side of grilled or roasted vegetables such as asparagus or Brussels sprouts makes for a delightful contrast.
Perhaps my favorite reason for adoring the Holy Basil and Lemon Chicken lies not in its vibrant flavor or health perks, but in the joy of cooking it. Whisking together the olive oil, the tangy lemon, aromatic basil, the whisper of garlic—it’s these small acts of creation that make the kitchen feel like home. Every time I make this recipe, it serves as a tasty nod to my Californian roots, my wellness ethos, and my undying love for American classic meals.
What You’ll Need
- 1.5 pounds of boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 3 tablespoons of olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup of fresh, Holy Basil leaves
- 1 large lemon, zested and juiced
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1/2 cup of chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon of cornstarch
- Additional Holy Basil leaves for garnish
Method
Step One
Season the chicken breasts generously with salt and pepper.
Step Two
In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is heated, add the chicken breasts to the pan. Sear the chicken breasts on both sides until they are golden brown and cooked through, about 6-7 minutes on each side. Remove the chicken from the pan and set it aside.
Step Three
In the same pan, add the minced garlic and sauté until it is fragrant and slightly golden, about 1-2 minutes.
Step Four
To the pan, add the Holy Basil leaves. Stir them around in the pan until they have wilted slightly, about 2 minutes.
Step Five
Zest the lemon directly into the pan. Then, cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice of both halves into the pan.
Step Six
Add the honey and chicken broth to the pan. Stir everything together, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
Step Seven
In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch with a teaspoon of water until it forms a slurry. Pour this slurry into the pan and stir to combine. Continue to cook the sauce until it thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
Step Eight
Return the chicken breasts to the pan and spoon the sauce over the top. Simmer everything together for another 2-3 minutes, until the chicken is heated through.
Step Nine
Serve the chicken hot, garnished with additional Holy Basil leaves. Enjoy your Holy Basil and Lemon Chicken.
