There’s something magical about a recipe that warms you from the inside out, and our Homemade Spiced Rum with Allspice does just that. This delightful concoction, saturated with the warm tones of spices, citrus peels, and dark rum, transports you right into a cozy New England kitchen, regardless of where you may currently find yourself. Just like the seafood delicacies I’m often seen whipping up, this recipe has its heartbeat in a well-loved tradition and a flavor that’s supremely unforgettable.

Homemade Spiced Rum with Allspice

All About Balance and Benefits

One of the elements I absolutely adore about our Homemade Spiced Rum with Allspice is the beautiful equilibrium of flavors. The citrus peels lend a fresh lift that artfully offsets the rich depth of the dark rum and brown sugar. Numerous studies such as this one suggest that the polyphenols in citrus fruits may have heart-protective capabilities. Meanwhile, the warming spices like vanilla, clove, and allspice aren’t just there for their tantalizing aroma; they also pack a healthy punch. For instance, cloves are known to be rich in antioxidants (source).

Crafting Delectable Pairings

This spiced rum can easily stand on its own, but its flavor profile also lends itself superbly to a range of dishes. Think dark chocolate desserts, richly spiced fruit cakes, or a creamy eggnog on a chilled evening. If you’re exploring international cuisine, this rum pairs perfectly with Caribbean and Central American dishes like jerk chicken or a comforting bowl of rice and beans. And if you ask me, it makes an enchanting companion to a Maine Lobster Roll.

Like silhouettes at sunset, familiar yet enchanting, the Homemade Spiced Rum with Allspice brings a comforting warmth. As I craft a bottle in my kitchen, the scent swirling through the air, I am reminded of the love I put into all my dish creations. That love, after all, is the most important ingredient.

What You’ll Need

  • 4 cups of Dark Rum
  • 1 1/2 cups of Brown Sugar
  • 2 Vanilla Beans
  • 6 Whole Cloves
  • 4 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 4 Orange Peels
  • 2 Lemon Peels
  • 8 Whole Allspice Berries
  • 1/4 teaspoon of Nutmeg
  • 4 pieces of Star Anise
ALLERGENS: None

Method

Step One

Pour the 4 cups of dark rum into a large glass jar that can be sealed tightly.

Step Two

Add the 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar into the jar and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved in the rum.

Step Three

Split the 2 vanilla beans lengthwise and scrap out the seeds. Add the seeds and the split beans into the jar.

Step Four

Add the 6 whole cloves, 4 cinnamon sticks, 4 orange peels, 2 lemon peels, 8 whole allspice berries, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 4 pieces of star anise into the jar.

Step Five

Seal the jar tightly and shake well to mix all the ingredients together.

Step Six

Store the jar in a cool, dark place for at least 2 weeks, shaking the jar every few days to mix the spices and rum.

Step Seven

After the 2 weeks, strain the rum through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a new bottle or jar, discarding the spices.

Step Eight

Your homemade spiced rum with allspice is now ready to enjoy! Pour over ice or use in your favorite cocktails. The rum will store well for up to a year.
