There’s something particularly special about my Homemade Yao Chos Jam recipe that never fails to bring a grin to my face, and that’s the secret ingredient of familial love. You see, my food journey began in the kitchen of my Irish grandmother who inspired my indulgence for home cooking. And while her recipes primarily revolved around hearty stews and potato dishes, the love and care she poured into her cooking has always remained with me.

Homemade Yao Chos Jam

The Magic behind Homemade Yao Chos Jam

But what sets this Homemade Yao Chos Jam apart, you may ask? Well, it’s the delicate balance of flavors that makes it so fascinating. The dragon fruit, or Yao Chos as it is known in some parts of the world, lends a mild sweetness that is surprisingly refreshing. When combined with the sharpness of the lemon juice and the stable sweetness of the granulated sugar, you end up with a jam that is perfect for breakfast toast or even as a glaze for meat dishes.

Of course, every great cook knows their sauces and my love for this jam shares a resemblance to the traditional jams like Apple Jelly I would participate in making during my summers in Boston. The combination of seafood and jam might seem unconventional, but I assure you, a dollop of my Homemade Yao Chos Jam can elevate the simplest of salmon dishes.

Not Just a Delicious Treat

Yes, it’s incredibly tasty, but did you know that this recipe packs a hefty punch when it comes to health benefits? The star ingredient, Yao Chos, is pretty impressive in the nutrition department. Dragon fruit is high in fiber and vitamin C, making the jam not just a tasty condiment but also a beneficial one to your health.

Fruit pectin, another staple in this recipe, is also believed to help digestion and even lower cholesterol.

And let’s not forget the joy of making jam at home. From my Irish Granny’s kitchen to your very own, this recipe bursts with tradition and love, enough to make any food lover’s heart content. I hope my Homemade Yao Chos Jam brings you as much joy as it brings me, as Laura and our little boy. Enjoy!

What You’ll Need

  • 3 cups Yao Chos (Dragon Fruit), peeled and chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup of lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons fruit pectin
  • 1/2 cup of water
ALLERGENS: The recipe does not contain any known common allergens.

Method

Step One

First, peel the Yao Chos (Dragon Fruit) carefully and chop them into small pieces. Ensure you have 3 cups of chopped fruit.

Step Two

In a large saucepan, combine the chopped Yao Chos, 1 1/2 cups of granulated sugar, and 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Mix them well.

Step Three

After the ingredients are mixed, add 2 teaspoons of fruit pectin into the saucepan. Stir it in until it is completely dissolved.

Step Four

Add 1/2 cup of water to the mixture in the saucepan. Turn the heat on to medium and stir the mixture continuously until it begins to boil.

Step Five

Reduce the heat to low after it reaches a boil and let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes, until the mixture thickens. Stir occasionally to avoid the mixture from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

Step Six

Finally, take the saucepan off the heat and allow it to cool. Once it’s cool, transfer the homemade Yao Chos jam into a jar or another container. Store it in the refrigerator and enjoy as desired.
