Welcome, fellow food lovers. Today we have a recipe that’s an ode to both my heritage and my love for fresher, healthier ingredients. Feast your senses on this, our all-new Horseradish Crusted Steak! This dish is a beautiful harmony of bold flavors and textures that blend seamlessly with the tenderness of the steak.
A Bit of Midwestern Charm
Being born and bred in the heartland of Nebraska, I grew up surrounded by farm-fresh produce and hearty meals that reflect the warmth and hospitality of the Midwest. This recipe, much like the others, draws from those foundations. The horseradish lends a unique spiciness to the dish that, combined with the crispy breadcrumbs, elevates the humble steak to a whole new level.
The Health Behind the Comfort
But it isn’t all about the taste. Cooking, to me, is the delicate art of combining flavors and nutritional balance. This is a vegetable-based steak recipe that manages to do just that! It’s definitely a healthier choice than other alternatives. The crust made of breadcrumbs, lemon zest, and parsley not only adds texture and tanginess, but also introduces elements of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. As for the steak, you get a heavy stack of protein as well as essential nutrients like iron and zinc. Surprised to be hearing about health benefits in a steak recipe? That’s the charm of cooking!
It’s More Than Just a Steak
The Horseradish Crusted Steak, while a star in its own right, works beautifully with a variety of dishes. It complements a cold, crisp salad, or a warm potato casserole. And if you’re a fan of horseradish, you might find it similar to the traditional, yet evergreen horseradish prime rib. No matter how you choose to serve it, this steak dish is sure to leave your taste buds wanting more.
So why do I love this recipe? It’s simple. It’s a manifestation of my love for heartland cooking, with an extra dash of health-conscious freshness. It encapsulates everything I love about food – the freshness, the flavors, and the feeling of home it brings with it.
What You’ll Need
- 6 steaks, each about 6 ounces
- 1 cup horseradish, drained
- 2 cups breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup parsley, chopped
- 2 tablespoons lemon zest
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- Salt, to taste
- Ground black pepper, to taste
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
Method
Step One
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Pat the steaks dry with paper towels and season both sides with salt and ground black pepper to taste.
Step Two
In a medium-sized bowl, combine the drained horseradish, breadcrumbs, chopped parsley, and lemon zest. Stir until the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Step Three
Heat the vegetable oil in a large oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the steaks and sear each side for about 2-3 minutes, or until they develop a brown crust.
Step Four
Remove the steaks from heat and spread the horseradish-breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of each steak, pressing lightly to adhere.
Step Five
Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and roast the steaks for about 10-15 minutes or until they reach your desired level of doneness. You can use a meat thermometer to check: 125°F (52°C) for rare, 135°F (57°C) for medium-rare, or 145°F (63°C) for medium.
Step Six
Let the steaks rest for a few minutes before serving. Drizzle each steak with a little of the olive oil to add richness and moisture. Season with additional salt and pepper if needed. Enjoy your Horseradish Crusted Steak!
