Ah, Hungarian Wax Pepper Chicken Stir-fry; it might seem far afield from my usual New England seafaring fare, but even a seasoned seafood connoisseur has room for palate expansion. And let me tell you, this dish is where the Atlantic meets the Danube.

Hungarian Wax Pepper Chicken Stir-fry

Although my heart is entrenched in the Maine coast, my taste buds love an occasional adventure. One of my favorite departures is the Hungarian Wax Pepper Chicken Stir-fry. The earthy heat of Hungarian Wax Peppers melding with the tender sweetness of chicken is truly a symphony in a stir-fry. Dressed with a drizzle of honey, a sprinkle of Hungarian Paprika and coupled with vibrant bell peppers, the dish is a riot of colors that deceivingly belie its inherent simplicity.

A Culinary Cross-Continental Connection

The complex, contrasting flavors in this dish are akin to the East Asian stir-fries, particularly the Szechuan Chicken. However, it’s the Hungarian paprika that sets this oeuvre apart, grounding it firmly in the heart of Central Europe. Star ingredients aside, this stir-fry shares a similar ethos with Maine’s seafood tradition: fresh, simple ingredients letting their natural flavors shine.

Another reason for my unrequited love for this stir-fry is its versatility. This Hungarian delight pairs excellently with a steaming bowl of jasmine rice, or even German-style roasted potatoes, for a truly hearty, rustic dinner. It’s the kind of dish made for sharing— my daughters Erin and Samantha absolutely can’t get enough of it.

More Than Just Tantalizing Tastes

Let’s not forget the added health benefits of the Hungarian Wax Pepper Chicken Stir-fry. Hungarian wax peppers are packed with Vitamin C, the bell peppers are a stellar source of Vitamin A, and the honey, garlic, and ginger all pack a potent punch of antioxidants. So while you’re delighting in every bite, your body will be reaping the rewards of this nutrient-dense dish.

In short, whether you’re hankering for something different, connecting with your Hungarian roots, or simply looking to sneak more veggies into the family dinner, I can guarantee a plate of Hungarian Wax Pepper Chicken Stir-fry will not disappoint.

What You’ll Need

  • 3 Hungarian Wax Peppers, sliced
  • 2 lbs of chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup of sliced red onions
  • 2 cups of sliced bell peppers (multi-colored)
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 thumb-sized ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoons of Hungarian Paprika
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 bunch of fresh basil leaves
  • 2 cups of steamed jasmine rice
ALLERGENS: Soy

Method

Step One

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.

Step Two

Add the chicken to the skillet or wok and season with salt, pepper, and Hungarian Paprika. Cook until the chicken is browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

Step Three

Remove the cooked chicken from the pan and set aside.

Step Four

In the same skillet or wok, add more oil if needed, then add the sliced Hungarian Wax Peppers and bell peppers. Stir fry them for 1-2 minutes.

Step Five

Add the sliced onions, minced garlic, and grated ginger to the skillet or wok. Stir fry everything together for another 2-3 minutes until the onions soften.

Step Six

Return the cooked chicken to the pan. Add the soy sauce and honey, stirring to coat all the ingredients evenly.

Step Seven

Right before serving, throw in the fresh basil leaves and give everything a stir one last time.

Step Eight

Serve the stir-fry hot over a bed of steamed jasmine rice.
