I hold a special place in my heart for the Kurrat and Feta Cheese Frittata. There’s something about the melding of ingredients that sings to both my West Coast upbringing and my Indian-Gujarati roots. The verdant freshness of the kurrat leaves, the creamy savoriness of feta cheese, and the bright pops of red from bell peppers and tomatoes… it’s like a symphony of tastes and colors on a plate.
The Fusion of Flavors
The Kurrat and Feta Cheese Frittata is an Indian-American fusion dish that is akin to Gujarati-style omelettes, but with a distinct kick from the Mediterranean feta cheese and the fragrant kurrat leaves. Kurrat, also known as Egyptian leek, bolsters this frittata with its distinct flavor that walks a fine line between garlic and onion, reminiscent of authentic Indian food (source).
The Health Benefits
Beyond its delightful taste, this vegetable-frittata is brimming with health benefits. Eggs, the mainstay of any frittata, are a rich source of protein and essential vitamins (source). The red bell peppers and tomatoes contribute a healthy dose of vitamin C and antioxidants, while the olive oil is packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats (source).
The Versatility of the Dish
What I also love about the Kurrat and Feta Cheese Frittata is its flexibility. Serve it alongside a crisp garden salad for a refreshing lunch, or pair it with some home-baked ciabatta and a glass of white wine for an elegant dinner. It’s a versatile dish that can easily adapt to suit your dining needs, much like the multicultural blend of flavors that inspired it. This frittata, I believe, is the epitome of food as a universal language – transcending cultures and bringing people together around a shared table.
In both our multicultural family and our multicultural kitchen, this Kurrat and Feta Cheese Frittata has taken a pride of place. It’s a serving of our global heritage, a token of our culinary journeys, and most importantly – a delightfully delicious dish that I am thrilled to share with you.
What You’ll Need
- 12 large eggs
- 1 cup of feta cheese, crumbled
- 2 cups of kurrat leaves, chopped
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
- 1 cup of tomatoes, diced
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon of dried oregano
- 1 pinch of red pepper flakes
Method
Step One
First, preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. While your oven is preheating, crack all 12 eggs into a large bowl.
Step Two
Next, add the feta cheese, kurrat leaves, salt, ground black pepper, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes to your bowl with the eggs. Whisk all ingredients thoroughly until well mixed.
Step Three
In an oven-safe skillet, heat your olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped red bell pepper and diced tomatoes into the skillet. Saute until the vegetables are soft, which should take about 5 minutes.
Step Four
Pour your egg mixture over your sauteed vegetables in the skillet. Stir gently to combine the ingredients, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the skillet.
Step Five
Let the frittata cook on the stovetop for about 5 minutes without stirring it, until the edges begin to set. Then, transfer the skillet to your preheated oven.
Step Six
Bake the frittata for 15-20 minutes, or until it is fully set in the center. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your Kurrat and Feta Cheese Frittata while hot!
