If you ever find yourself meandering the heartland, head high, eyes soaking in the Midwestern charm, let me recommend to you a little detour. A detour to indulge in a recipe I absolutely relish – the Lanzones Jam. Now I must admit, lanzones aren’t a common find amongst the corn fields of Nebraska, but once you get your hands on them – it’s an absolute joyride.
Love at First Bite
Something as humble as a fruit can offer so much variety, carrying with it the essence of its origin. And that’s perhaps what I love the most about this Lanzones Jam. Born in Southeast Asia, the rich sweetness of lanzones paired with a hint of tartness instantly takes me back to my first encounter with this unique fruit- a leisurely weekend at a Farmers’ Market in Lincoln, ogling at the fresh, exotic produce.
As an ardent supporter of farm-to-table cooking, I find this jam to be a remarkable way to preserve the freshness and vibrancy of lanzones. The marriage of sugar and citrus in this recipe, results in a sublime sweetness, accentuated by the tang of lemon – quite akin to our Midwestern apple and pear preserves. But what makes this recipe special is that delightful tart finish – a flavor note that we Midwesterners covet.
The Sweetness of Health
Beyond the burst of flavors, what appeals to me about the Lanzones Jam is its nutritional profile. Lanzones are touted for their abundance of dietary fiber, Vitamin C, and antioxidants – a concoction that bolsters immunity, aids in digestion and provides a brilliant skin glow. It’s a sweet treat that carries with it a wealth of health benefits.
While one might relish this jam with toast for breakfast, I find it pairs beautifully with some homemade cornbread or even our Midwestern beef stew – lending a delightful punch of sweetness. And let’s not forget about desserts. A dollop of Lanzones Jam on a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a generous smear over a warm slice of pound cake – heavenly!
So in essence, whether it’s the Midwestern charm, the health benefits, or the sheer adventure of experiencing world flavors, this Lanzones Jam recipe is a testament that the humble kitchen pantry has so much more to offer. Try it and enjoy the delightful possibilities.

What You’ll Need
- 2 lbs of Lanzones fruit
- 3 cups of granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup of lemon juice
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 teaspoon of pectin
Method
Step One
Peel the Lanzones fruit, discard the seeds and set it aside. Ensure that there are no seeds left in the fruit because it may add a bitter taste to your jam.
Step Two
In a large pot, combine the peeled Lanzones, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and water. Stir the mixture until the sugar dissolves completely.
Step Three
Place the pot on a stove and heat it over medium heat. Let the mixture boil and stir continuously for 10 minutes.
Step Four
Add the pectin to the pot and stir constantly to avoid any lumps. Continue to boil the mixture for another 20-30 minutes or until it reaches the desired thickness.
Step Five
Once the jam is thickened, remove the pot from heat and allow the jam to cool for a few minutes. After it cools down, transfer it to a sterile jar.
Step Six
Close the jar tightly and let it cool down on the counter. After it has cooled completely, store it in a refrigerator. The jam can be kept for up to 3 months.
