Having being born and bred in the Colorado Rockies, I, like many of the inhabitants of these beautiful mountain ranges, have developed an appreciation for hearty, comforting fare. However, every now and then, I love to take a culinary detour and explore flavors from the wider world. Today’s delight, Lanzones Tarts, reflects one of these foodie adventures.
Global Flavors in My Mountain Kitchen
The Lanzones Tarts – a simple, yet heavenly fruit-based dessert that hails from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. It’s not exactly typical of the game meats and trout dishes that populate my rugged, mountain cookbook, but its unique taste charmed me. Furthermore, this delightful tart can easily find its place alongside any hearty, homestyle main course. Consider serving it with a pot roast or a seafood stew – the tartness of the fruit cuts through the richness of these dishes, creating a balance that is sublime.
Health Benefits in Each Tart
One of the things that attracts me to the humble Lanzones fruit, apart from its undeniably exotic allure, is its plethora of health benefits. Bursting with vitamin A, which benefits eye health and boosts immune function, and dietary fiber to aid in digestion, these diminutive fruits definitely pack a nutritional punch. The lanzones, along with the sprinkling of warm, earthy spices like cinnamon and nutmeg that go into the tart, are sure to make your body and taste buds thank you.
Not much beats the sense of satisfaction as you slice through the golden, flaky crust to reveal the luscious, tropical filling. Each bite is a tantalizing mix of buttery crust and sweet-tart fruit filling, crowned with the warm kiss of cinnamon and nutmeg. The overall effect is like a ray of tropical sunshine breaking through the alpine clouds.
So, next time you’re looking for something a bit different to round off your meal, why not give Lanzones Tarts a whirl? Even here in the Rockies, we’re not immune to the allure of tropical fruit. At the very least, it’ll save you from having to tramp through the snow in search of dessert.
What You’ll Need
- 1 cup of all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 stick of unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- A pinch of salt
- 2-3 tablespoons of ice water
- 1 1/2 cups of lanzones fruit, pitted and cut into halves
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, for the lanzones
- 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
- 1 egg, beaten, for egg wash
- 1 tablespoon of coarse sugar, for sprinkling
Method
Step One
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, and a pinch of salt. Add the cubed butter and use your fingers to rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the ice water while stirring, until the dough begins to come together.
Step Two
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it briefly to bring it together. Shape the dough into a disc, wrap it in plastic, and refrigerate for at least an hour.
Step Three
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Step Four
In a separate bowl, combine the lanzones, 1/2 cup of sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Stir well to combine.
Step Five
On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to fit your tart pan. Press the dough into the pan and trim any excess. Pour the lanzones mixture into the tart shell.
Step Six
Brush the edges of the tart with the beaten egg and sprinkle the coarse sugar over the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.
Step Seven
Allow the tart to cool before slicing and serving. Enjoy your flavorful and delicious Lanzones Tarts!
