To me, the Lemon Basil Grilled Shrimp recipe isn’t merely a beautiful medley of flavonoids and proteins but transcends the definition of a perfect culinary fusion that embodies my Indian-American roots. It vividly brings to life the harmonious intertwining of flavors from the sun-kissed West-Coast and the vibrant Gujarati heritage that I hold dear. My love for this recipe lies not just in its irresistible taste, but also the doors it opens to lively family time at the grill, nourishing conversations over dinner, and moments of cultural introspection.
The Healthy Symphony of Flavours
In this simple yet sublime dish, the freshness of carefully selected shrimp, the welcoming zest of lemon, the earthiness of garlic, the smooth drizzle of olive oil, and the vivacious charm of fresh basil leaves converge in an expertly choreographed dance of flavours. It doesn’t stop at being a gourmet delight for the taste buds. Shrimp are a powerhouse of protein, vitamin B12, and selenium. Add to that the benefits of basil, from being rich in antioxidants to its anti-inflammatory properties, and you’ve got yourself a health-supporting, taste-amplifying dish that’s hard to resist.
A Confluence of Culinary Worlds
Lemon Basil Grilled Shrimp broadens the horizons of your dining experience. It’s reminiscent of the classic zesty Lemon Garlic Shrimp but offers its fresh twist with the generous inclusion of aromatic basil. You’ll also notice a subtle echo of Gujarat’s Khada Masala Jhinga, a recipe from my childhood, known for its liberal use of spices and tangy undertones. Teaming it up with a glass of Chardonnay adds a delightful depth to the overall meal.
As much as we relish the Lemon Basil Grilled Shrimp by itself, it pairs beautifully with various side dishes. A simple brown rice serving or a robust saffron rice amplifies the flavors and enriches the dining experience.
The Lemon Basil Grilled Shrimp recipe holds a special place in my heart. Not only does it nourish our bodies, but it also brings a feeling of cultural richness to our family dinner table. And for me, it’s those shared moments of joy and connection that elevates a dish from being great in taste to being spectacular in experience.
What You’ll Need
- 2 pounds of large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- Salt and pepper for taste
- 5 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon of lemon zest
- 1/3 cup of fresh lemon juice
- 2 cups of fresh basil leaves, chopped
- 6 bamboo or metal skewers
- Lemon slices for serving
- A bunch of fresh basil leaves for serving
Method
Step One
Preparation starts by preheating the grill over medium-high heat. In case you are using bamboo skewers, it will be best to soak them in water for at least 30 mins before grilling. It helps to prevent them from catching fire.
Step Two
Take a bowl and add 2 pounds of large shrimp, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, salt and pepper as per taste, 5 cloves of minced garlic, 1 tablespoon of lemon zest, 1/3 cup of fresh lemon juice and 2 cups of fresh basil leaves. Toss everything together until well combined.
Step Three
Now, thread the shrimp onto the skewers. Try to pierce each shrimp once near the tail and once near the head.
Step Four
Once all the shrimps are on the skewers, put them on the grill. Cook for 5-7 minutes on each side or until the shrimp are pink and opaque.
Step Five
Finally, remove the grilled shrimps from the grill. Allow them to rest for a few minutes before serving.
Step Six
For serving, spread some lemon slices and a bunch of fresh basil leaves on the plate, place the grilled shrimps on top. Your Lemon Basil Grilled Shrimp is ready to be served.
