What I love about the Lettuce, Bacon, and Tomato Sandwich is the harmonious blend of the simple ingredients perfect for a wholesome lunch or a quick snack. When the crispy bacon meets the fresh lettuce and juicy tomatoes, it’s a magical fusion of taste and texture, complemented by the rich creaminess of mayonnaise and the seasoning of salt and pepper. And wrapping all these up, there’s the faithful bread! This recipe holds a special place in my culinary repertoire.
A Louisiana Influence
Although far from my Creole indulgences like beignets and eclairs, the Lettuce, Bacon, and Tomato Sandwich has a closeness to my root! The classic LBT, as I like to call it, can be taken with a twist to match the lively spirit of Louisiana cuisine by adding a dab of hot sauce or some slices of avocado. Just as in Louisiana where every dish has a story to tell, even a humble sandwich has its own delightful tale to narrate in the world of gastronomy.
Nutrition Unlocked
While treating your taste buds, the LBT also offers a good array of nutrients. Lettuce is packed with essential vitamins and minerals, being an excellent source of Vitamin A, which is great for eye health and boosting immunity. Tomatoes too are a treasure trove of vitamins, and most importantly, are rich in lycopene, a potent antioxidant known to reduce the risk of heart diseases and some cancers. Bacon, though savored for its taste, also provides a significant amount of protein and some important vitamins and minerals, especially B12.[1] [2] [3]
Finally, the right kind of bread can contribute to the health mix. Opting for whole grain bread could provide you with a fair share of fiber and other essential nutrients[4]. While being modestly nutritious, this sandwich promises flavors that transport you from the everyday monotony and a touch of crispiness that speaks volumes of an unputdownable crunch.
The LBT can be a standalone meal, or can be paired with a bowl of your favorite soup or salad. Although, it’s hard not to draw parallels between the LBT and the classic BLT (Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwich). Also, if you’re a fan of Club Sandwiches, you might find the LBT to be a simpler and less fussy cousin of the former. The versatility of this sandwich is another reason you would love the LBT recipe.
What You’ll Need
- 12 slices of bread
- 6 leaves of lettuce
- 12 slices of bacon
- 3 tomatoes
- 1/2 cup of mayonnaise
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
Method
Step One
Begin by laying out the 12 slices of bread on a clean, flat surface. Spread a gentle amount of mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread. Be sure to use a total of 1/2 cup of mayonnaise for all the slices.
Step Two
Next, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and cook the bacon slices until they are crispy and brown. This should usually take about 5-7 minutes. Once cooked, transfer the bacon slices to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb the excess grease.
Step Three
While the bacon is cooking, wash and thinly slice the 3 tomatoes. Also, rinse the lettuce leaves and pat them dry using a kitchen towel or paper towel.
Step Four
Place one leaf of lettuce on a slice of bread smeared with mayonnaise. Add two crispy bacon slices on top of the lettuce. After that, layer some tomato slices on top of bacon. Add salt and pepper according to taste.
Step Five
Finally, cover the stacked ingredients with another slice of bread, keeping the side spread with mayonnaise facing downwards. Press the sandwich gently to stabilize it. Repeat the same process for all the bread slices. Your Lettuce, Bacon, and Tomato Sandwiches are now ready to serve and enjoy!
