Steeped in tradition and brimming with tantalizing flavors, our Licorice Root Tea carries with it a certain allure that beckons to be discovered. This recipe is a delightful fusion of my African roots and Southern upbringing, seamlessly blending the warmth of Nigerian hospitality with the essence of Georgia’s sweet homely nostalgia.

Licorice Root Tea

Beneficial Brew to Wellness

Licorice root, known for its unmistakable sweet flavor, has been treasured for centuries for its numerous health advantages. When combined with the invigorating freshness of lemon and the soothing qualities of honey, this Licorice Root Tea works as a tonic, providing gastrointestinal relief, and promoting respiratory and adrenal gland health.

The optional addition of ginger offers an extra layer of wellness, as it’s renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Not to mention, the zesty punch it adds is bound to liven up your taste-buds!

A Celebration of Flavors

With its intriguing medley of flavors, this tea invites comparison to Moroccan mint tea, both in its refreshing quality and its signature blend of herbs and citrus. While it’s a unique stand-out beverage on its own, it would also work well served alongside a traditional Nigerian frejon or alongside a classic Southern pecan pie, enhancing the culinary experience with its rich, layered taste.

What sets this Licorice Root Tea recipe apart, for me, is its versatility. You can personalize it with additions like a slice of orange for a tangy zest or a few sprigs of fresh mint for a cool, fragrant touch. Honestly, brewing a large pot of it feels like coming home – it’s the embodiment of Afro-Southern fusion, a sweet tribute to the two worlds that have shaped me.

Whether you’re from the South, West Africa, or anywhere in between, I hope this Licorice Root Tea brings you as much joy, warmth, and comfort as it’s brought to my partner and me. Sharing this recipe is like sharing a part of my story, and I am excited to see how you will make it part of your own.

What You’ll Need

  • 6 cups of water
  • 2 inches of Licorice root
  • 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup of honey (optional)
  • 1 sliced orange (optional)
  • 6 slices of fresh ginger (optional)
  • 6 sprigs of fresh mint (optional)
ALLERGENS:

Method

Step One

First, in a large pot, bring the 6 cups of water to a boil.

Step Two

Next, add 2 inches of Licorice root to the boiling water and reduce the heat. Allow this to simmer for approximately 15-20 minutes.

Step Three

Now, strain the mixture to remove the Licorice root and pour the liquid back into the pot.

Step Four

Add to this 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice. If desired, this is also the time to add the 1/2 cup of honey, for sweetness, and the 6 slices of fresh ginger, for a hint of spice.

Step Five

Optionally, cut one orange into slices and add these to the pot as well. Let all the ingredients steep together, over low heat, for an additional 10 minutes.

Step Six

Finally, pour the tea into cups and garnish each with a sprig of fresh mint if you prefer. Serving hot is recommended for the best flavor.
