One of my most cherished recipes is the vibrant, refreshing and utterly delicious Loroco and Tomato Salsa. As a Southern belle from Charleston, South Carolina, I was brought up on traditional Southern comfort food. But it’s recipes like these that allow me to embrace the plentiful bounty of fresh fruits and veggies available in our beautiful region.

Loroco and Tomato Salsa

A Childhood Favorite with a Spin

This delicious salsa brings back precious memories of my childhood. It’s akin to the traditional tomato salsa with a twist – thanks to the inclusion of loroco, a widely used vegetable throughout Central America, particularly El Salvador. Loroco with its unique, slightly tart flavor, adds a new dimension to the traditional tomato salsa that we are all familiar with. And just like the best Southern dishes, it’s approachable, straightforward, and full of flavor.

The Health Benefits of Loroco and Tomato Salsa

But this salsa isn’t just about the flavors. It’s abundant in health benefits too. The key ingredient, loroco, is rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, known to promote digestion and boost the immune system. Combine this with the antioxidant-rich tomatoes, the immune-boosting properties of garlic, and the detoxifying benefits of cilantro, and you have a concoction that’s not just tasty but good for your body too. Here’s some more information about loroco’s health benefits.

Pairings and Serving Suggestions

When it comes to serving, Loroco and Tomato Salsa is a standout star! It’s a versatile condiment that can be paired with numerous dishes, such as tortilla chips, quesadillas, tacos, or even atop grilled chicken or fish. You can surely find a recipe here that you’ll love.

And of course, no Southern dish is complete without a bit of heat! So, don’t forget that finely chopped jalapeno. The spice it brings is the perfect counterbalance to the tartness of the loroco and the sweetness of the tomatoes, making each bite a delightful explosion of flavors that keeps you coming back for more.

In essence, Loroco and Tomato Salsa is a celebration of my Southern heritage, mingling simple ingredients to create a simple, wholesome, and delicious experience.. And that’s why I simply love this recipe.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups Loroco, finely chopped
  • 3 medium Roma tomatoes, diced
  • 1/2 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Tortilla chips, for serving
ALLERGENS: None

Method

Step One

Begin by preparing your produce. Chop your loroco, red onion, green bell pepper, and cilantro finely. Dice your roma tomatoes and seed and finely chop your jalapeno pepper. Mince your garlic.

Step Two

Place the chopped loroco, diced tomatoes, chopped red onion, chopped bell pepper, minced garlic, and chopped jalapeno into a large bowl. Gently toss to combine all the ingredients.

Step Three

Next, pour in your fresh lime juice over the vegetable mixture. This will give your salsa a fresh and tangy flavor. Mix well to ensure all the ingredients are coated in the lime juice.

Step Four

Add your chopped cilantro to the bowl. Cilantro adds beautiful color and a distinctive flavor to your salsa. Gently mix it in to incorporate it throughout the salsa.

Step Five

Now it’s time to season your salsa. Add salt and pepper to the mixture according to your taste. Remember, it’s easier to add more seasoning later, so be conservative with your seasoning initially.

Step Six

Let your salsa sit for a few minutes so the flavors have time to blend together. You can serve it immediately, but the flavors will continue to develop and meld together the longer you let it sit.

Step Seven

Finally, serve your Loroco and Tomato Salsa with tortilla chips for a delicious and healthy appetizer or snack. Enjoy!
