To a Southern belle like me, dabbling with a new recipe isn’t just about exploring different ingredients, it’s about crafting an experience. That’s why I fell head over heels for the Lovage and Potato Gratin. This culinary delight combines my favorite things about quintessential root veggies and bright berries, and brings a sense of sophistication and elegance to the table.
The Love for Lovage and Potato Gratin
There’s an undeniable allure to this delicious dish. Perhaps it’s the alluring combination of thinly sliced Yukon Gold potatoes layered with the distinct taste of fresh lovage leaves, or the bubbling goodness of Gruyere and Parmesan cheese. Or maybe it’s the hint of garlic and a touch of freshly ground pepper, mixed with the rich indulgence of heavy cream. This gratin recipe is a beautiful symphony of flavors, all balanced by the vibrant splash of mixed fruit adorning the top.
A Recipe Rich in Benefits
Besides its irresistible taste, Lovage and Potato Gratin offers a handful of health benefits. The Yukon Gold potatoes are a great source of Vitamin C and Potassium while the mixed fruits add a boost of essential antioxidants and vitamins. Lovage, though less-known, is a hidden jewel in the culinary world. It offers anti-inflammatory benefits and is rich in Vitamin B complex. Furthermore, the garlic in the recipe has been linked to various health benefits, including cardiovascular improvements and immunity enhancement.
This magnificent dish is somewhat similar to traditional Gratin Dauphinois, but the introduction of lovage and fruit takes it to a level above. It pairs beautifully with a simple green salad or a roasted chicken for a complete, sumptuous meal.
Despite my Southern roots and a penchant for biscuits, fried chicken, and coastal seafood, I find myself constantly drawn to this breathtaking blend of earthy tones and bright flavors. So, in your culinary travels, I urge you to try this Lovage and Potato Gratin. It has transformed my kitchen, and I believe it will do the same for yours.
What You’ll Need
- 2 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, sliced thin
- 2 tbsp fresh lovage leaves, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp freshly ground pepper
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tbsp butter, melted
- 4 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
- 2 cups mixed fruit (such as strawberries, blueberries, peaches, or cherries), for garnish
Method
Step One
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large bowl, combine the thinly sliced Yukon Gold potatoes, chopped fresh lovage leaves, minced garlic, freshly ground pepper, and sea salt, ensuring all the potato slices are well seasoned.
Step Two
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the heavy cream and milk. Bring this mixture to a simmer and then pour it over your potato mixture in the bowl. Stir so that every piece of potato is coated in the creamy mixture.
Step Three
Butter a gratin dish or a shallow baking dish with the melted butter. You can use a pastry brush or a piece of kitchen paper for this. Transfer your potato mixture into this buttered dish, spreading it out evenly.
Step Four
Combine the grated Gruyère cheese and grated Parmesan cheese in a small bowl and then sprinkle this mix over the top of your potatoes. Ensure all slices have a good covering of cheese.
Step Five
Place your filled gratin dish in your preheated oven and bake for about 50-60 minutes. The gratin should be golden brown and bubbling, and the potatoes should be tender when tested with a knife.
Step Six
When the gratin is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Sprinkle with the chopped fresh parsley just before serving.
Step Seven
For an optional sweet element, garnish with the mixed fruit. The tangy, sweet flavors of the fruit will complement the rich, savory gratin beautifully. Enjoy your Lovage and Potato Gratin!
