Meet my cherished recipe – Mashed Potatoes – a comfort food of exquisite delight and culinary brilliance that dances between my Spanish and Caribbean heritage. It’s a simple dish that unveils layer upon layer of flavor and texture with every spoonful. The silkiness of the potatoes, the creamy richness of milk and butter, all harmonized with a sprinkle of salt and pepper and garnished with a lively touch of fresh parsley or chives. The resulting concoction is nothing short of a gastronomic ballet – a medley of flavours pirouetting upon the palate.

The Dance of Flavors

With every recipe, there’s a dance – a rhythmic, heat-filled tango between ingredients in the kitchen. Being a dance teacher in Miami, this resonates intimately with me. The Russet or Yukon Gold Potatoes lead the way with their earthy notes, and the butter, true to its glossy allure, glamorizes the entire mix. Each spoonful of this Vegetable-based Mashed Potatoes flows as smoothly as a well-choreographed dance, winning over taste buds effortlessly.

The Healthy Touch

Not to be outdone by the explosion of flavors, the health benefits of the Vegetable Mashed Potatoes are also something to write home about. The potatoes, rich in Vitamin C and Potassium support cardiovascular health and are packed with fiber that aids digestion. The milk and butter contribute their share of Vitamin D and Calcium, promoting bone health as per Harvard Health Publishing.

Though the contents of this dish are simple, the end ensemble of Vegetable Mashed Potatoes gets along fabulously with a variety of dishes. It complements a good ol’ steak or grilled chicken just as marvelously as it does with a hearty roast. Alternatively, pair it with a vegetable stew for a delightful, vegan-friendly feast. With its creamy consistency and flexible flavor profile, this dish could twirl itself gracefully around any of your favorite main courses.

Whether served as a hearty side dish at a family gathering, or enjoyed as a soothing, quick meal on a laid-back day, the Mashed Potatoes has always been an enduring presence on my kitchen’s dance floor. Come, give it a try and let your taste buds dance to its delicious rhythm!

What You’ll Need

  • 4 pounds of Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1.5 cups of whole milk
  • 1 stick of unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons of Salt
  • 1 teaspoon of Ground black pepper
  • Garnish: chopped fresh parsley or chives (optional)
ALLERGENS: Milk, Butter

Method

Step One

Take the 4 pounds of Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes. Thoroughly clean them under running water. Peel the potatoes and cut them into quarters.

Step Two

Place the potatoes in a large pot and add enough cold water until it is about 1 inch above the potatoes. Add the 2 teaspoons of salt into the pot. Bring the pot to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low and let it simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, typically around 15-20 minutes.

Step Three

While the potatoes are simmering, combine 1.5 cups of whole milk and 1 stick of unsalted butter in a small saucepan. Heat over low heat until the butter is fully melted, stirring occasionally. Turn off the heat as soon as the butter is melted and keep it warm.

Step Four

After the potatoes are cooked, drain the water thoroughly and return the potatoes back to the pot. Mash the potatoes using a potato masher until smooth.

Step Five

Pour the warm milk and butter mixture over the mashed potatoes. Continue mashing until the potatoes absorb the milk mixture and become creamy. Add in 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper and more salt if needed. Stir until all the ingredients are well-combined.

Step Six

Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl. If desired, garnish with chopped fresh parsley or chives. Your delicious creamy mashed potatoes are ready to serve!
