Stepping out of my Comfort Zone

I find that when I’m in the kitchen, I’m usually experimenting with traditional Southern recipes with a modern twist, but every once in a while, I feel the urge to step out of my comfort zone. That’s exactly what happened with the Meat Patties with Mashed Potatoes and Brewery Sauce, a distinctive German specialty. Although Germany might seem worlds away from my usual Tex-Mex culinary realm, the diverse elements of this dish are as invitingly familiar as they are intriguingly different.

Transforming a Classic

The journey of discovering this German recipe was both thrilling and challenging. Not being originally from a German culinary background, my inspiration was driven by the fascinating creations of Vreni Giger, a renowned Swiss chef known for her unique take on traditional recipes. The ground beef’s hearty texture, the potatoes’ soothing earthiness, and the dynamic kick from the dark German beer all culminate into a feast of flavors that transcended national boundaries.

What makes this dish, even more, intriguing is its ability to blend flawlessly with other cuisines. For example, a side of traditional sauerkraut would be a fabulous German accompaniment, while a spicy Pico de Gallo salsa might seem unconventional, but surprisingly works wonders, offering a punchy contrast that can only be described as a celebration of culinary artistry.

So, next time you want to break away from your usual cuisine, why not give these Meat Patties with Mashed Potatoes and Brewery Sauce a try? You might just discover a new side to your gastronomic passions!

Method

Step One:

Start by preparing the meat patties. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, bread crumbs, eggs, finely chopped onion, minced garlic cloves. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix until all the ingredients are well combined. Shape the mixture into patties. Set them aside.

Step Two:

Procced to make the mashed potatoes. Wash, peel and chop the potatoes into equal-sized pieces. Place them in a large pot filled with water and bring to a boil. Cook until potatoes are tender which is usually about 15 to 20 minutes. Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot.

Step Three:

Add milk, butter, salt and pepper to the pot of cooked potatoes. Mash the ingredients together until smooth. If potatoes are too dry, add more milk as needed. Set the mashed potatoes aside and keep them warm.
