I’ve got a great affinity for hearty, invigorating dishes, and the Miner’s Lettuce Smoothie with Banana and Orange is one that makes my taste buds dance—not just with its full-fledged deliciousness, but also by being wonderfully refreshing, brimming with nutrients, and amazingly simple to make. This one fuels your body, mind, spirit, and undeniably fits into the ethos of my cooking—inspired by the vivacious Rockies, infused with their exhilarating freshness and hearty simplicity.

Miner's Lettuce Smoothie with Banana and Orange

A Recipe Inspired by Nature

The Miner’s lettuce, which happens to be the star of this recipe, is a wild food foraged from the heart of Mother Nature herself. Named after gold miners who ate it to prevent scurvy, this verdant green has a distinct, mildly tangy taste. I’d say it harmonizes quite spectacularly with the sweet creaminess of ripe bananas, the juicy zestiness of oranges, and the lightly nutty touch of almond milk. To add to the richness, we’ve got some Greek yogurt, with a drizzle of honey and a dash of lemon juice to achieve that perfect balance of sweetness and tartness.

Health in a Glass

While I’m definitely inclined towards game meats and hearty mountain cooking, I also keep a keen eye on health and nutrition. And this particular smoothie, my dear friends, is a powerhouse of good health. The Miner’s lettuce is packed with Vitamin C and iron, bananas supply us with the much-needed potassium and dietary fiber, while oranges come teeming with Vitamins C and A. Add to these the high-protein Greek yogurt and almond milk, rich in calcium and Vitamin E, we’re talking serious nourishment here.

But hey, don’t let the ‘healthy’ part intimidate you. Remember, it tastes absolutely divine. In fact, it reminds me somewhat of a classic Orange Banana smoothie, but with a far more interesting personality. Serve it with a side of whole grain toast slathered with almond butter or eat alongside a bowl of your favorite granola, and you’ve got a balanced breakfast.

Essentially, the Miner’s Lettuce Smoothie with Banana and Orange is not just a recipe—it’s a tribute to the Rockies, in the form of a nutritious and delicious smoothie. And I am certain that every sip will convince you why it is one of my favourites. Here’s to the great outdoors! Cheers!

  • 2 cups of Miner’s lettuce
  • 3 ripe bananas
  • 2 large oranges

  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 cup of Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 6 Orange slices for garnish (optional)

Method

Step One

Wash and clean your Miner’s lettuce thoroughly to remove any dirt or grit. Once clean, roughly chop it and put to one side.

Step Two

Peel and chop your bananas, place them to the side. Next, peel and segment your oranges. Remember to remove any pips or seeds.

Step Three

In a large blender, add the chopped Miner’s lettuce, bananas, oranges, almond milk, honey, and lemon juice. Blend until the mixture becomes a smooth consistency.

Step Four

Next, add the Greek yogurt and ice to the blender, blend again until all the ingredients are well combined and you have your desired smoothie consistency.

Once your smoothie is ready, pour it into glasses. Cut the remaining orange into six slices and if you wish, garnish each glass with an orange slice.
