As a native New Yorker, my culinary inspirations are drawn from the city’s diverse flavor. One recipe that uniquely reflects this diversity is the Mouse Melon Salad—a fresh, colorful, and health-packed dish that takes center stage in my home kitchen, much like I do on the theatrical stage.
Tickling Taste Buds with Uncommon Ingredients
Ever the exotic ingredient, the mouse melon, or Melothria scabra, is reminiscent of my love for under-the-radar bagel shops in the city, dotting the neighborhood with their unique flavors that are hard to come by anywhere else. Coupled with the citrus punch from oranges, acidity from strawberries and blueberries, sweetness from diced pineapple – it’s a fruit medley that wakes your palate in a delightful jive of flavors.
Healthy and Hearty
Besides its tantalizing flavors, the Mouse Melon Salad is teeming with health benefits. For those on a healthy diet, delight in the merging tastes of these nutrient-rich fruits, offering a good dose of antioxidants, Vitamin C, fiber, and other essential nutrients. This salad is a great way to sneak in a health boost on a busy schedule – a trait my actress wife and I genuinely appreciate.
This recipe is similar to other fruity salads like the Berry Watermelon Fruit Salad or Greek Style Fruit salad, but the mouse melon gives it a unique zesty edge like no other. Try pairing it with a grilled cheese sandwich or Greek omelet for a complete meal.
Living in NYC, you get to taste the world in a borough. And the Mouse Melon Salad, with its refreshing and vibrant ingredients, is a little like that – a joyous celebration of diversity, flavor, and health on your plate.
What You’ll Need
- 2 cups of mouse melon
- 2 oranges, peeled and sectioned
- 1 cup of strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 1 cup of blueberries
- 1 cup of pineapple, diced
- 1 lime, juiced
- 2 tbsp of honey
- 1/2 cup of fresh mint leaves, chopped
Method
Step One
Start by washing the mouse melons, strawberries, and blueberries under cold water. Allow them to dry.
Step Two
Prepare the fruits. For the mouse melons, simply cut them in half. Section the oranges, slice the strawberries and dice the pineapple.
Step Three
Combine the prepared mouse melons, orange sections, sliced strawberries, blueberries, and diced pineapple in a large bowl. Gently mix them together until the fruits are evenly distributed.
Step Four
Prepare the dressing. Squeeze the juice from the lime into a small bowl. Add the honey to the lime juice and whisk until thoroughly combined.
Step Five
Drizzle the honey and lime dressing over the fruits in the large bowl. Toss the fruit gently to ensure that the dressing is evenly distributed.
Step Six
To finish, sprinkle the chopped fresh mint leaves over the salad. You can serve immediately or refrigerate for an hour to allow the flavours to meld together.
