As I sit here on a sunny California afternoon, the warm scent of baked goodness wafting out of my kitchen, I can’t help but think about the joy that my Mulberry and Apple Crumble brings. It’s so much more than just a dessert. It’s a beacon of comfort, a fusion of my Gujarati roots, and a symbol of the West Coast’s bounty.
Inspiration Behind the Recipe
The inspiration behind this delectable dish is deeply personal. It merges the warm and comforting aspect of crumble, a popular dessert in the States, with the vibrant tang of mulberries, a fruit that was an indelible part of my summers back in Gujarat. My Mulberry and Apple Crumble takes me on a journey from India to California with every bite, creating a culinary delight that my family, especially my husband Faisal and our two little boys, absolutely adore.
A Bright and Fresh Fusion
My Mulberry and Apple Crumble isn’t just about flavor, it symbolizes the seamless blending of the flavors that define both my cultures. The slightly tart mulberries and the crisp sweetness of apples are reminiscent of Gujarati summer — bright, fresh, and full of life. The crumbly topping with a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg takes me back to the comforting wholesomeness of West Coast cuisine.
Paring Partner and Nutritional Goodness
This crumble is not only a treat to the taste buds but also has several health benefits. The oats in the crumble are a great source of important vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Besides, Apple, as we know, ‘keeps the doctor away’ and mulberries are packed with Vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants, and other beneficial nutrients. This fruit crumble pairs exceptionally well with a hot mug of Masala Chai on a cozy evening or a scoop of Green Tea Ice Cream for an extra antioxidant punch.
To all the food lovers out there, give my Mulberry and Apple Crumble a go and experience the harmonious blend of two cultures in one dessert. Its wholesome appeal and sweet fragrance will keep you coming back for more.
What You’ll Need
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 3/4 cups brown sugar, packed
- 1 cup oats
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cubed and chilled
- 4 cups mulberries, cleaned
- 3 apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
Method
Step One
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
Step Two
In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add the cubed and chilled butter. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to combine the butter with the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Set aside.
Step Three
Place the cleaned mulberries and sliced apples in the prepared baking dish. Drizzle the fruit with the lemon juice.
Step Four
In a small bowl, combine the white sugar and cornstarch. Sprinkle this mixture over the fruit, tossing gently to combine.
Step Five
Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling.
Step Six
Remove the crumble from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your homemade Mulberry and Apple Crumble!
