Why I Love Canadian Mushroom Gravy Poutine Nachos

Nothing quite captures the heart of comfort food like our Canadian cousin, the Mushroom Gravy Poutine Nachos. This dish demonstrates a decadent blend of North American indulgence and a hint of inspiration from the culinary genius of Jean-Charles Dupont. It’s the perfect mélange of cheesy, salty, and saucy goodness that’ll keep you coming back for more.

Mushroom Gravy Poutine Nachos

A Twist on a Canadian Favorite

Native to Quebec, Canada, traditional poutine is a combination of crispy fries, cheese curds, and gravy, making it an ultimate comfort food. By infusing this with my love for nachos – a firm favorite in Atlanta and across the South – these Mushroom Gravy Poutine Nachos bring together two continent’s tastes into one dish. Cooking is all about creating, sharing, and merging flavors and this dish is no different. Taking inspiration from different culinary backgrounds has allowed me to love and appreciate this recipe – combining tradition and creativity.

Inspiration from far and wide

Even though I grew up in Atlanta, the echo of my parent’s West African roots can still be subtly tasted in this recipe. The beef broth in the mushroom gravy shares a tenuous connection to Nigerian dishes like beef stew – popular for its rich, hearty sauces. The fresh mushrooms and onions also add a depth of flavor, typical of Southern American cooking, without overpowering the dish.

The beauty of the Mushroom Gravy Poutine Nachos lies not just in its delicious taste, but in its universality. It can perfectly pair with a spiced BBQ chicken, or stand alone as the star of a weekend brunch, game night, or a relaxed family dinner. More than just a plateful of nachos, it’s the embodiment of international culinary friendship and there’s a lot to love about that!

So whenever you’re craving something uniquely tasty, comforting and brimming with character, give Mushroom Gravy Poutine Nachos a shot. Chances are, you’ll love it as much as I do.

What You’ll Need

  • 1lb Frozen French Fries
  • 2 cups Cheese Curds
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil
  • 2 cups sliced fresh Mushrooms
  • 1 small Onion, diced
  • 1 clove Garlic, minced
  • 2 cups Beef Broth
  • 1 tablespoon Soy Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh Parsley
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced Green Onions
  • 6 servings of Tortilla Chips
ALLERGENS: Milk, Soy, Corn

Method

Step One

Begin by preheating your oven to the temperature suggested on the frozen french fries package. Spread the fries out on a baking sheet and bake according to package instructions until they are crispy and golden brown.

Step Two

While the fries are baking, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and diced onion to the skillet. Sauté until the mushrooms are golden and the onions are soft and translucent.

Step Three

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and stir for one minute – don’t let the garlic burn. Then add the beef broth and soy sauce to the skillet, stir, and let simmer.

Step Four

In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water. Pour this mixture into the skillet with the mushrooms and sauce, stirring constantly. Continue to cook the gravy until it thickens.

Step Five

Once the fries are done, remove them from the oven and sprinkle the cheese curds over top. Then, pour over the hot mushroom gravy. This will start to melt the cheese curds. Sprinkle the fresh parsley on top of the gravy.

Step Six

Apply the shredded cheddar cheese and put the fries back into the oven. Leave them in until the cheddar cheese has fully melted.

Step Seven

Lastly, once the fries have cooled off slightly, garnish them with green onions and surround them with tortilla chips. Your Mushroom Gravy Poutine Nachos are now ready to be served! Enjoy this unique and tasty spin on traditional poutine.
