Nebraska may be the epicenter of comfort food in the American Midwest, but it’s also a place that fully appreciates a well-executed, adventurous meal. That’s why I can’t resist introducing you to this delectable Nori Wrapped Tuna—a flavor journey that carries the rich essence of Nebraska heartland cooking across the Pacific and into your dining room. It’s not just a dish—it’s an experience.
A Taste Affair with Nori Wrapped Tuna
If you know one thing about me, it’s that I’m a sucker for presenting familiar ingredients in a thoughtful, unique way, and that’s precisely what the Nori Wrapped Tuna seeks to do. Infusing that sushi-grade tuna with the wholesome farm-to-table freshness I grew up around, it’s a true celebration of traditional American heartland and exotic Asian fusion. If you’ve enjoyed Poke Bowls and Sushi Rolls, you’ll love this nori wrapped dish with a twist.
The Health Factor
Deliciousness aside, the Nori Wrapped Tuna also brings a plethora of nutritional benefits to your plate. High in protein and healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, the tuna is a powerhouse of nutrition for maintaining heart health. The avocado and cucumber offer a lovely splash of essential vitamins and minerals, while the sushi rice, carefully cooked with a hint of vinegar, sugar, and salt, provides sustaining energy in the form of complex carbohydrates. And let’s not forget the nori, full of iodine, which boosts thyroid health and aids in metabolism.
Accompanied by a lovely swirl of soy sauce and wasabi paste, this dish brings not only a tsunami of flavor but also a striking balance of health and indulgence—a culinary philosophy I truly appreciate and love to share with my family too. I can see us gather around the table, taking turns to savor a bite of this Nori Wrapped Tuna, all while enjoying each other’s company under the grace of God, as we do in our church. A family that eats together, stays together.
Complimenting Dishes
Although the Nori Wrapped Tuna shines through as a standalone dish, it matches exceptionally well with a steaming bowl of Miso Soup or a delicate side of chilled Sunomono Salad. For dessert, a simple scoop of Green Tea Ice Cream would be the perfect, gentle ending note.
Every bite reveals a touch of Nebraska’s heartland through the farm-fresh avocados and cucumbers, while also uncovering the spirit of coastal culinary magnificence with the sushi-grade tuna. The seaweed wrapper is a nod to our rich water bodies and brings about a unique depth to this illustrious dish.
So, tie your apron, gather these ingredients, and prepare to embark on a culinary adventure with this Nori Wrapped Tuna. As with every recipe I share, it carries a pinch of love from my Nebraska kitchen to yours.
What You’ll Need
- 1.5 pounds of sushi grade tuna
- 6 sheets Nori (seaweed)
- 2 ripe avocados, sliced
- 1 cucumber, julienned
- 2 cups sushi rice
- 4 cups water
- 1/2 cup rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1.5 teaspoons salt
- 1/3 cup soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon wasabi paste
- 1/4 cup pickled ginger
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
Method
Step One
Start with rinsing the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This is essential as it removes the starch and makes your sushi rice stick together.
Step Two
In a medium saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to boil. Add the rinsed sushi rice and cook uncovered for around 20 minutes. Then turn off the heat and let it sit for 10 minutes with the lid on.
Step Three
While the rice is cooking, mix together the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan. Heat it over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.
Step Four
Once the rice has finished cooking and has rested, transfer it to a large bowl and fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
Step Five
Lay a sheet of Nori onto a bamboo sushi mat. Dip your hands in water (to prevent the rice from sticking) then spread a thin layer of sushi rice onto the Nori, leaving about an inch free at the top.
Step Six
In the center of the rice, place a few slices of avocado, a few slices of sushi grade tuna, and a few julienned slices of cucumber.
Step Seven
Lift the edge of the bamboo mat closest to you, and roll the sushi away from you, applying some pressure to keep it tight.
Step Eight
Slice the sushi roll into bite-sized pieces using a sharp knife dipped in warm water.
Step Nine
Repeat this process with the remaining ingredients.
Step Ten
Serve the Nori-wrapped sushi with soy sauce, wasabi, pickled ginger, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds on top. Enjoy your homemade Nori Wrapped Tuna sushi roll.
