Food is a connector, a bond, a beautiful way to say, “let’s spend time together.” But more than that, it’s a source of wholesome nourishment, a provider of energy, and a provider of comfort, all seasoned with flavors that create unforgettable memories. This Roasted Tangerine and Romaine Salad recipe, a personal favorite of mine, is a testament to this belief.

This dish takes me back to my humble Louisiana beginnings. I come from a home where food was a celebration, an ode to our French and Creole lineage. This recipe, like many from my past, is a perfect blend of simplistic elegance and heartwarming memories.

The Aesthetics of Flavor

The Roasted Tangerine and Romaine Salad is a dance between sweet and crispy, tangy and robust. The harmonious blend of the roasted tangerines with the crunchy romaine lettuce, the mellow sweetness of the honey with the lively freshness of the apple cider vinegar — it’s a medley of flavors that are as pleasing to the palate as they are to the eye.

Roasted Tangerine and Romaine Salad

The Art of Healthful Indulgence

More than just a delight to the senses, this salad is an essential source of many beneficial nutrients. The tangerines, a star component of this recipe, are a brilliant source of Vitamin C, while the romaine lettuce provides much-needed fiber and hydration. The olive oil is a great source of healthy monounsaturated fats, and the roasted almonds bring in a good dose of protein.

This Roasted Tangerine and Romaine Salad is reminiscent of a classic Caesar Salad. Yet, it’s given an exciting twist with the addition of our lovely, citrusy tangerines. This salad would pair beautifully with a crisp, white wine. It would also compliment protein-rich dishes, such as roasted chicken or a hearty quinoa dish wonderfully.

More than just a recipe, this salad is a way of life. It’s a sweet and tangy reminder of the simple joys in life and the endless possibilities that lie in a handful of wholesome ingredients. It’s where fine dining meets the comfort of home, where health meets indulgence, and where a platter of salad becomes a feast of flavors.

What You’ll Need

  • 6 tangerines
  • 2 large heads of Romaine lettuce
  • 1/4 cup of honey
  • 1/4 cup of olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup of roasted almonds, chopped
ALLERGENS: honey, almonds

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut 4 of the tangerines in half and place them on a baking sheet. Roast them in the oven for about 20 minutes or until they become tender and slightly caramelized. Once they are done, let them cool and then squeeze out the juice into a bowl. Keep the juice aside for the dressing.

Step Two

While the tangerines are roasting, wash and chop the Romaine lettuce. Make sure to discard any wilted outer leaves and the base. Place the chopped lettuce in a large salad bowl.

Step Three

Peel the remaining 2 tangerines and separate them into segments. Add these segments to the salad bowl with lettuce.

Step Four

In a small bowl, whisk together the roasted tangerine juice, honey, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. This will be your salad dressing.

Step Five

Drizzle the dressing over the lettuce and tangerine segments in the salad bowl. Toss the salad well to ensure all the ingredients are evenly coated with the dressing.

Step Six

Sprinkle the roasted almonds over the salad just before serving to add a crunchy texture. You can add more or less to taste. Your Roasted Tangerine and Romaine Salad is now ready to serve!
