There’s something to be said about a recipe that uniquely emboldens the spirit of a city, ties together threads of varied cultures into a flavor-packed mélange. Sassafras Tea, this vibrant, fruit-based concoction, does just that and represents the diverse culinary reputation of my home, New York City. Think of how iconic NYC flavors all come alive in this one stirring cup!
A Tribute to Health and Taste
From the root of the sassafras tree to the invigorating citrus of fresh lemons and oranges, every ingredient adds its own rich flavor profile and health benefits. Sassafras, for starters, is a key ingredient that not only lends its distinct aroma but is also packed with antioxidants. And what about the double whammy of lemon and orange slices? They not only enhance the taste but also pump in a hefty dose of vitamin C. Honey, an age-old natural sweetener, wraps everything together with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Pairing Possibilities
Sassafras Tea is a versatile drink that can complement a variety of dishes. For a True New Yorker-brunch, pair it with a classic bagel topped with cream cheese. In the evening, it’s a soothing companion to heartier dishes like burgers. However, do not limit yourself to these suggestions; the tea’s citrusy, slightly sweet, and aromatic profile allows it to pair well with an array of snacks and meals. You can get creative and let this flavorful brew inspire new food pairings. After all, being open to a medley of flavors is what encapsulates the soul of NYC!
And let’s not forget the optional touch of vanilla extract. It’s like a final theatrical flourish in a great stage performance, something I am intimately familiar with. Not necessary, but it wraps up the act, or in this case, the brewing, in a beautiful way, enhancing the overall depth and warmth of this comforting tea.
The Sassafras Tea is the culinary equivalent of the city’s 24/7 hustle bustle and its unmistakable vibrancy. Through it, my love for my native New York pours into your teacups. It stands as a testament to how simple, wholesome ingredients, just like the city dwellers, come together to create something truly unique and delicious. Here’s to NYC, to health and to the scrumptious Sassafras Tea. Cheers!
What You’ll Need
- 1 Root of Sassafras tree, 2-3 inches long
- 1/2 cup of Lemon juice
- 3/4 cup of Honey
- 1 Orange, sliced
- 1 Lemon, sliced
- 6 cups of Water
- 1/2 teaspoon of Vanilla extract (optional)
- 6 Cinnamon sticks
Method
Step One
Begin by washing the sassafras root thoroughly and remove any dirt or debris. After rinsing, chop the root into small pieces.
Step Two
In a large pot, combine the chopped sassafras root with the 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let simmer for about 30 minutes.
Step Three
After 30 minutes, remove the pot from the heat and carefully strain the liquid to remove the root pieces. Pour the liquid back into the pot.
Step Four
Into the pot of liquid, add the half cup of lemon juice, the 3/4 cup of honey, and the half teaspoon of vanilla extract if desired. Stir until the honey is fully dissolved.
Step Five
Add the slices of orange and lemon to the pot, along with the cinnamon sticks. Simmer everything together on low heat for an additional 15-20 minutes.
Step Six
After simmering, remove the pot from heat once more and strain the liquid to remove the fruit slices and cinnamon sticks. Being sure to pour into a heatproof container, your Sassafras Tea will now be ready to serve either hot or iced, as per your preference.
