Influenced by my ranch upbringing and the native American culinary traditions that I grew up with, this vegetable-based recipe is a gentle nod to such timeless cooking. Cabbage and onions are staple foods in many cultures and are not only nourishing but also add a rich depth of flavor to the plate. Sauteed to a caramel-like sweetness, the cabbage and onions form a rustic dish that brings comforting warmth and a reminiscence of home.

What You’ll Need
- 1 large white onion
- 2 medium heads green cabbage
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Method
Step One
Firstly, prepare your vegetables: dice the large white onion and slice the green cabbage into thin strips. Mince the 2 cloves of garlic and set all these aside.
Step Two
Heat up 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a large pan over medium heat. Wait for the butter to melt completely.
Step Three
Add the diced onion to the pan. Saute the onions until they are translucent and start to caramelize, which should take about 5-10 minutes.
Step Four
Next, add the minced garlic to the pan and saute it with the onions for about 2 minutes, or until the garlic is golden brown and aromatic.
Step Five
Add the sliced cabbage to the pan. Sprinkle the cabbage with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Stir well to combine the ingredients.
Step Six
Continue to saute the cabbage and onions for about 20 minutes, or until the cabbage is soft and slightly caramelized. Make sure to stir occasionally to prevent the cabbage from burning or sticking to the pan.
Step Seven
Once the cabbage is cooked to your liking, remove the pan from heat. Taste the sauteed cabbage and onions and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
Step Eight
You can now serve the Sauteed Cabbage and Onions as a side dish. Enjoy!
