Why I Love Mexican Shaken Fish

There’s a joy that comes from the amalgamation of myriad cultures in one dish, and that’s the joy I find in this Shaken Fish recipe. As an enthusiastic advocate of Afro-Southern fusion, the riotous fusion of flavors in this recipe resonates strongly with my culinary philosophy. The harmonious symphony of the hot chili, sweet honey, and tart lime juice that’s so evocative of exhilarating Mexican flavours all dance on the tongue in a salsa of taste sensation you won’t forget in a hurry. Complemented with the tender white fish and the fresh burst of avocados and tomato, the symphony soars to a crescendo in perfect harmony!

The Inspiration Behind Shaken Fish

While I prepare it with a touch of Southern zest, the original inspiration for this Shaken Fish chows down to Mexico, bearing strong resemblance to a classic Baja fish taco. The recipe was also partially inspired by none other than Rick Bayless, an American chef known for his expertise in traditional Mexican cuisine.

The Uniqueness of Shaken Fish

What sets this Shaken Fish apart is its unique cooking method. Instead of frying or baking, the fish is shaken in its myriad of seasoning, which adheres to its surface, making every bite a delightful burst of flavor. And who wouldn’t love the health benefits that come along with this cooking style, allowing you to enjoy the delight of rich flavors without worrying about excessive oil or deep frying?

Another facet of the Shaken Fish that is sure to tickle your taste buds is the subtle layering of spice. While this is a distinctively Mexican dish, I’ve added a small nod to my West African heritage with a dusting of cayenne pepper, not listed above but my own secret addition, with its distinctive kick. This, combined with the earthiness of cumin and the sweetness of paprika creates a rich flavor profile that’s bold but balanced. However, don’t let the fear of spiciness deter you. You can always taper the amount of spice used according to your liking!

If you’re planning a get-together, this Shaken Fish can confidently headline your menu. With its fun preparation method and vibrant flavors, it’s a definite crowd-pleaser. It pairs beautifully with classic sides like Mexican red rice or a refreshing summer salad. And if you’re on the hunt for a dessert to round up your meal, I highly recommend a batch of homemade churros with a molten chocolate dipping sauce – talk about ending on a sweet note!

Oh, the wonderful flavors waiting for you in this Shaken Fish recipe! Whether you’re whisking your family away on a culinary adventure or looking to showcase your culinary prowess at a dinner party, this recipe won’t disappoint. Dive in, and let the fiesta begin!

What You’ll Need

  • 2 pounds of white fish fillets
  • 1/2 cup of lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 2 avocados, sliced
  • 2 cups of tomato, chopped
  • 1 cup of fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 6 tortillas
ALLERGENS: Fish, Wheat

Method

Step One

Start by preheating your grill on high heat. While it heats up, prepare the fish by rinsing under cool water and patting dry with paper towels. Set aside.

Step Two

In a bowl, combine the lime juice, olive oil, honey, minced garlic, chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix this thoroughly until it becomes well combined.

Step Three

Immerse the fish in the marinade you just made. Make sure every part of the fish is covered. Let it sit and marinate for about 10 minutes.

Step Four

After the fish is done marinating, place it on the heated grill. Grill each side for about 4-6 minutes. Be careful not to overcook as fish cooks pretty quickly. Once cooked, transfer it to a platter.

Step Five

While the fish is grilling, prepare your fresh ingredients. On a chopping board, slice your avocados, chop your tomatoes, and finely chop the fresh cilantro. Set these aside.

Step Six

Once the fish is done and rested, assemble your dish. Dress each tortilla with the grilled fish, followed by the sliced avocado, chopped tomatoes, and fresh cilantro.

Step Seven

Serve your Shaken Fish with extra lime wedges and enjoy your meal! This recipe makes for a great lunch or dinner and can be easily packed for a picnic too.
