The Health Benefits of Shiso Tea

One of the main reasons I adore this recipe isn’t just its delectable taste, but the multitude of health benefits it offers. Shiso is a herb widely used in traditional Asian medicine and is renowned for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. The lemon juice is rich in Vitamin C, and natural honey offers up its executive suite of health benefits, including alleviating allergies and boosting memory. Consuming wholesome ingredients such as these have the potential to strengthen your immune system and bring about a calming effect for a sharper, healthier mind.

Complementing Dishes

While Shiso Tea can be enjoyed on its own, it pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. It complements trout and other game meats splendidly, allowing for a full-bodied flavor experience. Its nuanced combination of sweet and tart also lends beautifully to pairing with desserts, making it an ideal dinner party closer. For a truly harmonious blend of taste and texture, I’ve found that it pairs exceptionally well with a hearty venison pot roast, or even a fresh Pan-Fried Trout should you be inclined for a combination of my personal favorites.

So why do I love Shiso Tea: A calming tea made from infused Shiso leaves? I ask myself the same question every time I lift that aromatic mug to my lips. Perhaps it’s the wholesome ingredients, the paired dishes it enhances, or maybe, the comfort it brings after a chilly day in the great outdoors of Colorado. Much like every recipe I share with you, this one is imbued with one essential ingredient- love.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups of fresh Shiso leaves
  • 6 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1 cup of fresh lemon juice
  • 6 slices of lemon for garnish
ALLERGENS: Honey, Lemon

Method

Step One

Take 2 cups of fresh shiso leaves. Rinse them thoroughly to remove any dirt or contaminants. Then gently pat the leaves dry using a clean kitchen towel.

Step Two

Place the cleaned shiso leaves into a large saucepan. Pour 6 cups of water into the saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.

Step Three

Once the mixture has reached a boil, decrease the heat. Allow the tea to simmer for about 15 minutes to ensure the shiso leaves are fully infused in the water. Once done, turn off the heat and let the tea cool for a few minutes.

Step Four

Use a sieve to strain the tea into a large pitcher, removing the shiso leaves. Ensure to press down on the leaves to get maximum flavor.

Step Five

Add 1/2 cup of honey to the strained tea. Stir well to ensure the honey is well dissolved. Then, add 1 cup of fresh lemon juice. Stir again to combine all the ingredients.

Step Six

Pour the tea into individual glasses or cups. Garnish each serving with a lemon slice, and it’s ready to enjoy!
