Imagine the delightful zing in your mouth when you first taste Sorrel Salsa Verde. It’s a king among salsas, with its unique, tart flavor and a refreshing mix of ingredients. The sweet and herbaceous elements, paired with a pop of citrus and a hint of warmth from the jalapeño, take me back to my roots where traditional Southern-style recipes embrace a touch of the unexpected.
The Flavor Profiles Shine
Just like any good Southern dish, this Sorrel Salsa Verde is all about layered flavors. Sorrel – a leafy plant that shares the tartness of a Granny Smith apple – combines wonderfully with the sweet and crisp character of the green apple. Add to that the cooling effect of cucumber and the hit of fresh mint. It’s a dance of flavors that will keep your palate intrigued with every bite. This salsa is independent, but still flexible enough to harmonize flawlessly with a variety of dishes from fish tacos to grilled chicken.
The Health Factor
And let’s not forget the health benefits. This Sorrel Salsa Verde is power-packed with nutrients. Sorrel on its own is a great source of vitamin C, an essential nutrient to boost your immune system. Combined with the antioxidant-rich garlic, the hydrating cucumber, and the heart-healthy properties of the extra virgin olive oil, this salsa is not just a flavor-bursting delicacy, it’s a health investment. Lime juice, another key player, delivers an extra punch of Vitamin C besides aiding digestion.

This Sorrel Salsa Verde stands out on its own, but if you’re looking for a taco to drape it over, you can try my Fried Fish Tacos. The crispiness of the fish juxtaposed with the zingy coolness of the salsa— it’s a match made in food heaven. This salsa is also a surprising addition to your brunch menu, capable of brightening up an Eggs Benedict or a classic Shrimp and Grits recipe with its refreshing flavors.
Whatever you pair this Sorrel Salsa Verde with, it transcends the traditional, taking your meal to the next level with its refreshing twist. It’s a tribute to my Southern roots with a nudge towards trying something new. And in the spirit of a Southern belle who loves to ride the waves of the ocean and the culinary world, I encourage you to surf the flavor wave of this unique salsa. Enjoy the ride!
What You’ll Need
- 1 cup sorrel leaves, stems removed
- 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint leaves
- 1/2 green apple, cored and diced
- 1/2 cucumber, diced
- 1 jalapeno pepper, seeds removed and diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
Method
Step One
Start by preparing all your ingredients. Remove the stems from the sorrel leaves, chop the fresh mint leaves, core and dice the green apple, dice the cucumber, remove seeds and dice the jalapeno pepper, and mince the garlic cloves.
Step Two
Once all your ingredients are prepared, put the sorrel leaves, mint leaves, green apple, cucumber, jalapeno pepper, and minced garlic into a blender or food processor.
Step Three
Add 2 tablespoons of lime juice and 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil in the blender or food processor.
Step Four
Blend all the ingredients together until they are well mixed and the salsa reaches your desired consistency. If you prefer a chunkier salsa, blend the ingredients for less time. If you want a smoother salsa, continue blending until the mixture is completely puréed.
Step Five
Once the salsa is blended, season it with salt and pepper to your taste. Remember, it’s best to start with a smaller amount of salt and pepper – you can always add more, but you can’t remove it if you add too much.
Step Six
The Sorrel Salsa Verde is now ready to be served. It can be enjoyed as a sauce or dip for various dishes. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
