About Sourdough
Welcome to our take on the magnificent Sourdough, a tangy, crusty bread with a distinct taste and character that’s irresistible. A toast to the beauty of fermentation and the art of baking, Sourdough is the chronicle of a gastronomic journey that culminates in a piece of bread that’s nothing short of incredible.
The Story Behind Sourdough
Dating back to at least 3700 BC, Sourdough is one of the earliest forms of leavened bread and possibly originated in Ancient Egypt. This bread owes its name to the sour-tasting dough from which it’s made – a result of fermentation. It’s a bread synonymous with diligence considering the nurturing of sourdough starter it requires. A well-maintained starter gives this bread a depth of flavour that is unmatched and unforgettable.
The Taste and Texture of Sourdough
What sets Sourdough apart is its unique flavour profile. The taste of Sourdough is a delightful blend of sour, tangy notes along with the wholesome sweetness of the grain, a testament to the magical interplay between yeast and bacteria during its fermentation. The crust, a beautiful golden-brown, crackles with every slice, revealing a soft and slightly chewy crumb that is unlike any other bread.
Sourdough: A Versatile Companion
Given its robust texture and depth of flavour, Sourdough is a perfect companion to many dishes. It’s a champion when it comes to hearty sandwiches or slathered generously with creamy clam chowder. Additionally, it shines when paired with the richness of a classic spaghetti in tomato sauce, where its acidity expertly balances the sweet-savoury character of the pasta. Naturally, a breakfast table with Sourdough, lightly toasted and smeared with butter and jam or avocado, is a sight to behold and savor.
So, we invite you to embrace the art of making Sourdough, relish in its taste that transports you through centuries, and discover how it can reinvent the way you perceive bread in your culinary adventures!
What You’ll Need
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 1.5 cups lukewarm water
- 2 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2.5 teaspoons salt
- 5 cups All-Purpose Flour
- Extra flour for dusting
Method
Step One
Take the sourdough starter and mix it with 1.5 cups of lukewarm water until well combined.
Step Two
Add 2 teaspoons of instant yeast to the mixture, stirring until it is fully dissolved.
Step Three
Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and mix until it fully dissolves into the mixture.
Step Four
Stir in 2.5 teaspoons of salt to the mixture.
Step Five
Gradually add 5 cups of All-Purpose Flour, stirring consistently until the dough is smooth and doesn’t stick to the edges of the bowl.
Step Six
Lightly dust a clean surface with some extra flour. Knead the dough on the floured surface for about 10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
Step Seven
Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Step Eight
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Shape the dough into a loaf and place it on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for about 35 to 45 minutes, or until it is golden brown.
Step Nine
Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
