What You’ll Need

  • 1.5 cups of firm tofu, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 red chili peppers, sliced
  • 1.5 cups chopped holy basil
  • 1.5 bell peppers, cut into strips
  • 2 large carrots, thinly sliced
  • 1.5 cups chopped pineapple
  • 6 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1.5 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch, mixed with 3 tablespoons water

Method

Step One

Press your tofu to remove as much moisture as possible. Then, cut the tofu into cubes, approximately 1 inch in size.

Step Two

In a large pan heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Once the oil is heated, add the cubed tofu carefully to avoid splattering. Fry until golden brown, then remove from the pan and set the tofu aside.

Step Three

Add the minced garlic and sliced chili peppers to the same pan. Sauté for a couple of minutes until the garlic is golden brown and the chili peppers are fragrant.

Step Four

Add the sliced bell peppers and carrots to the pan. Stir-fry for 5-6 minutes, until the vegetables start to soften.

Step Five

Add the chopped pineapple and holy basil to the pan. Stir-fry for an additional 1-2 minutes, until the pineapple is warmed through and the basil is wilted.

Step Six

In a small bowl mix together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and brown sugar. Stir this sauce into the pan, until everything is well coated.

Step Seven

Make a slurry by mixing the cornstarch with water in a small bowl. Pour this mixture into the pan and stir until the sauce has thickened, about 1-2 minutes. Return the fried tofu to the pan and coat with the sauce. Continue to cook for another minute until everything is heated through.

Step Eight
