One of my absolute favorites, the Spicy Laver and Squid Stir-Fry is a tantalizing blend of flavors that brings together the best of coastal South Carolina’s seafood with the earthy taste of vegetables and the zing of Oriental spices. This recipe is more than just a meal – it’s a culinary journey that starts in the familiar territories of the American South and ends up in the far East, delivering a truly international experience on a plate.

Spicy Laver and Squid Stir-fry

The Taste Symphony!

What makes the Spicy Laver and Squid Stir-fry so special? It’s a perfectly orchestrated symphony of flavors – with each ingredient playing its part to add note after note of deliciousness. You can taste the crisp peppiness of bell peppers, the sharpness of onions, and the savory depth of garlic. The subtly sweet squid adds texture while the laver brings a subtle oceanic undertone, all tied together by the savory soy sauce and Sriracha’s fire.

The Health Symphony!

But it’s not all about the taste. The Spicy Laver and Squid Stir-fry is packed with nutrients. Squid is a great source of protein, vitamins B2 and B12, and is rich in minerals like zinc, selenium, and copper (source: Healthline). Add to this the vast array of nutrients from laver which is replete with vitamins A, C, E, and K. It also provides dietary fiber and is a good source of amino acids too. All these, complemented by the antioxidants of bell peppers, onions, and garlic, make this dish not just a treat for the palate, but also a boon for your health.

This dish reminds me of a Cajun Seafood Stir-fry, another favorite of mine, with its delicious melding of fresh seafood and vibrant veggies. It also pairs brilliantly with a side of jasmine rice or noodles, gently tossed in a light sesame oil for added richness.

As a Southern belle, I never thought I’d fall this hard for a recipe that pairs traditional coastal ingredients with Asian flavors. Yet here I am, declaring my love for Spicy Laver and Squid Stir-fry. Try this recipe out and let me know if it tantalized your taste buds the same way it did mine.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 pound of squid, cleaned and sliced into rings
  • 2 cups of laver (seaweed), soaked and drained
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of Sriracha sauce
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1 bunch of spring onions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds
ALLERGENS: squid, soy, sesame

Method

Step One

Pour the vegetable oil into a large frying pan or wok and heat it over medium heat. Once hot, add the squid rings and cook them until they turn opaque. This should take about 2-3 minutes. Remove the squid from the pan and set it aside.

Step Two

In the same pan, add the laver, onion, garlic, red and green bell peppers. Stir-fry them for about 2-3 minutes, until the onions become translucent and the peppers start to soften.

Step Three

Add the soy sauce, sugar, and Sriracha sauce into the pan. Stir to mix well. Season with salt and pepper to your personal taste.

Step Four

Return the cooked squid to the pan and stir it into the vegetable mixture. Keep stir-frying for about 3-4 more minutes, until all the ingredients are well mixed and the flavors meld.

Step Five

Just before serving, sprinkle over the chopped spring onions and sesame seeds. Toss everything one more time to distribute the garnishes. Serve your Spicy Laver and Squid Stir-fry hot, with rice or noodles on the side if desired.
