Why I Love Colombian Steak in Creole Sauce
Today we’re delving into the richness of the South American cuisine with a delectable Colombian recipe known as Steak in Creole Sauce. Cooking, for me, has always been about exploration and daring to journey outside the confines of yearlong family traditions.
Why This Colombian Dish Warms My Heart
Though my roots are deeply planted in Southern cooking, where biscuits and fried chicken are staples, I can’t resist venturing out. Steak in Creole Sauce, with its aromatic panoply of steak, fresh tomatoes, bell peppers, garlic and a dash of cumin – these vibrant ingredients, when melded together, evoke a wider culinary world that get my taste buds tingling and heart singing.
Similar to my favorite coastal seafood dishes from South Carolina, the Steak in Creole Sauce is a delightful symphony of flavors. It pack a punch, but also surprise you with refreshing bursts of succulence from fresh ingredients.
My Culinary Inspiration
Though often saturated in Southern culinary traditions, my cooking is also inspired by chefs like Jamie Oliver, who is known for his adventurous approach to global dishes. And while there isn’t a particular chef that inspired this Steak in Creole Sauce recipe, it’s the spirit of culinary exploration that Oliver and others embody that spurred me to try it in the first place. It’s a perpetual journey of taste discovery, and I’m excited to pass along this station of my voyage to you.
I often pair this Colombian recipe with light salads or roasted vegetables to complement the robustness of the Steak in Creole sauce. It’s a versatile dish that can stand alone, accompany other dishes, and it never fails to impress – be it a laid-back family dinner, a beach picnic, or a special dinner party.
So, get ready, wear your chef’s hat, open your heart to a new culinary adventure and let’s dive deep into this delicious journey together, one bite at a time.
What You’ll Need
- 2 lbs beef steak, cut into serving size pieces
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 large tomatoes, finely chopped
- 2 red bell peppers, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons of tomato paste
- 1 cup of beef broth
- 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
- 1/2 cup of chopped fresh cilantro
Method
Step One
Season your beef steak pieces evenly with the teaspoon of salt and half teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper.
Step Two
Heat the two tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the seasoned beef steak pieces and sear them on each side until browned. Once done, remove the steak pieces from the skillet and set them aside.
Step Three
In the same skillet, add the finely chopped large onion and minced garlic cloves. Cook until they begin to soften and become fragrant.
Step Four
Add the finely chopped large tomatoes and red and green bell peppers to the skillet with the onions and garlic. Stir to combine and cook for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
Step Five
Stir in the 2 tablespoons of tomato paste until it is well incorporated with the vegetables.
Step Six
Pour in the cup of beef broth into the skillet, followed by adding the teaspoon of cumin powder. Mix well, ensuring everything is evenly distributed.
Step Seven
Return the seared steak pieces back into the skillet, spooning some of the sauce and vegetables over the steak to ensure they are well covered.
Step Eight
Lower the heat, cover the skillet and let the steak simmer in the sauce for about 20 minutes, or until it is cooked to your desired doneness.
Step Nine
Right before serving, sprinkle the chopped fresh cilantro over the steak in creole sauce. Serve hot and enjoy!
