I remember there was something distinct about our family Sundays on the farm. It was those gatherings that landed me, eventually, in the heartland of Nebraska. And it was here I found the inspiration for this delightful, fresh, and flavorsome meal, Steamed Corn with Avocado Leaf Flavor. This dish, vibrant and earthy, always recalls that homey, wholesome feeling of the farm; corn, butter, the humble avocado leaf, a dusting of sea salt and black pepper. It all wraps up into a perfect homage to that distinct Midwestern comfort food style I’ve come to cherish.

A touch of Recipe History

This recipe traces its roots to simple farm cooking, similar to the comforting Chicken Avocado Corn Salad. The star of the dish, of course, is the corn – a staple food in the Midwest agricultural state I call home. But the twist – the ‘secret sauce,’ if I can be so bold – is the fresh avocado leaves. Their earthy aroma, their delicate herbal touch, it’s like Mother Nature’s own seasoning straight from the farm to your table.

The Health Benefits

I think it’s important to note some of the health benefits of this meal. Corn is rich in vitamins and fiber, making it a heart-healthy choice. Avocado leaves also make an interesting addition to the dish with their nutritional value. They contain nutrients that are beneficial for digestion and they can also serve as an antioxidant. And the use of unsalted butter and sea salt pairs up perfectly to keep the sodium in check. (WebMD)

It might be the Nebraskan in me talking, but there’s no doubt that this dish pairs perfectly with a robust beef stew or a creamy chicken pot pie. It’s versatile – a meal that feels just as suited for a cozy family dinner as it does for a festive holiday feast.

Ah, Steamed Corn with Avocado Leaf Flavor… It might not be your grandmother’s recipe, but give it a whirl and it just might become yours.

What You’ll Need

  • 6 ears of sweet corn, husk removed
  • 6 fresh avocado leaves
  • 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 cup of water
ALLERGENS: corn, butter

Method

Step One

Begin by preparing your ingredients. Remove the husks from the 6 ears of sweet corn, wash the fresh avocado leaves and measure out your butter, sea salt, and black pepper.

Step Two

Take a large steamer or pot and add a half cup of water. Place the corn into the pot and the clean avocado leaves on top of the corn. The leaves will infuse their flavor into the corn whilst steaming.

Step Three

Put the pot on a medium heat and let the water come to a boil. Once the water starts boiling, reduce the heat to low, put the lid on the pot and allow the corn to steam for around 15 minutes, or until they are tender and cooked through.

Step Four

Whilst the corn is steaming, melt the 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a small pot or pan over low heat.

Step Five

Once the corn is fully cooked, remove them and the avocado leaves from the pot. Drizzle the melted butter over the steamed corn. Then, season with the sea salt and black pepper to taste.

Step Six

Serve the Steamed Corn with Avocado Leaf Flavor immediately as a delicious and healthy side dish.
