From the heart of Texas to the international culinary stage, I bring you a familiar southern ingredient served up in an unanticipated way! Today, I am thrilled to present the Stir Fried Purslane with Garlic and Soy Sauce recipe – a dynamic fusion of tex-mex elements and Asian culinary wisdom. This dish makes the humble yet nutritious “purslane” the star of the show, highlighting its flavors in a globally inspired symphony of taste!
Purslane – An Unassuming Superfood
It’s interesting to observe that cuisines around the globe have a common point of convergence – the use of local, authentic, home-grown ingredients. Purslane, a hearty, succulent green leaf often found sprawling across our garden paths, is one such ingredient that is mostly underplayed but is a nutritional powerhouse. Rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and some B-complex vitamins, purslane supports a stronger immunity, eye health, and metabolic functions.
Simplicity, Presented with Sophistication
What sets Stir Fried Purslane with Garlic and Soy Sauce apart is its simplicity. The recipe requires a basic cooking environment and a few regular pantry staples such as garlic, soy sauce, and vegetable oil. The combination of these ingredients elevates the purslane to a high culinary note, with its subtly peppery tones delightfully intensified by the sizzling dance of garlic and soy sauce. Sesame oil adds a delicate finishing touch with its distinctive aroma.
If you are familiar with traditional Southern greens stir fry, this recipe may bring a refreshing variation to your table. The flavor is a glorious fusion of Southern and Asian cuisines, and it pairs beautifully with a wide array of dishes – think grilled meats, pan-seared tofu, or even a bowl of simple white rice!
And for my fellow curious home cooks out there exploring global cuisines, this stir-fried purslane dish may remind you of Stir-fried Bok Choy or other Asian green staples. But with its unique charm, this recipe will truly leave you with a new summer favorite.
What You’ll Need
- 2 large bunches of purslane (around 1.5 pounds)
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
- 4 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon of sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons of water
Method
Step One
Begin with preparing the purslane by washing it thoroughly and removing any hard stems. The tender stems and leaves are the most flavorful parts of purslane.
Step Two
Next, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the minced garlic to the pan. Saute the garlic until it changes color slightly and begins to emit a pleasant aroma, taking care not to let it burn.
Step Three
Add the prepared purslane to the pan and stir-fry for approximately 5 minutes, or until the leaves have wilted and the stems are tender.
Step Four
Combine the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, black pepper, sesame oil, and water in a bowl, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved.
Step Five
Pour this sauce over the stir-fried purslane and garlic, tossing gently to ensure all of the greenery is evenly coated.
Step Six
Continue to cook the mixture for another 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly and the flavors have melded together.
Step Seven
Serve your Stir Fried Purslane with Garlic and Soy Sauce warm as a delicious and healthy side dish. Enjoy!
