I’ve always had a deep love for the Swiss Chard and Goat Cheese Tart, a dish that emulates the hearty, natural tastes of the Pacific Northwest, blended with touches of delicate refinement. The combination of Swiss chard, a sturdy leafy green robust in flavor and nutrients, and creamy goat cheese is a testament to the unifying power of food. This tart is about elevation – transforming humble ingredients into a nutritious, flavorful and utterly delicious meal.

Swiss Chard and Goat Cheese Tart

The Benefits of Swiss Chard

Beyond its unique flavor profile, what makes this tart special for me is its starring ingredient – Swiss chard. This leafy green is a prized plant in both my Seattle backyard and my Japanese family kitchen. A powerhouse of dietary fiber, Swiss chard offers a rich supply of Vitamins A, C and K, as well as a good measure of essential minerals such as iron. According to Healthline, regularly consuming Swiss chard can contribute to good eye health, enhanced digestion and improved blood circulation.

Savoring Each Bite

Folding into the tart the pungent goat cheese which, according to Health magazine, provides healthy doses of protein and calcium while being a more easily digestible alternative to cow cheese – creates a luxurious creaminess and tang that beautifully balances the earthy chard. Then, there’s the aromatic onion and garlic, caramelizing gently in quality olive oil and lending an incredible depth of flavor. The added hint of nutmeg provides the perfect spice backdrop to this symphony of ingredients.

The Swiss Chard and Goat Cheese Tart is, in many ways, reminiscent of a classic quiche or Spanish tortilla, yet it offers its own distinctive flavor narrative. It’s a perfect accompaniment to a fresh, crisp salad and can also pair charmingly with a bowl of light soup, making it a versatile and satisfying centerpiece in any meal. I do hope you love it as much as I do.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 pre-made pie crust
  • 1 bunch Swiss chard, stems removed and chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 ounces goat cheese, crumbled
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Eggs, Milk, Cheese

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Unroll the pre-made pie crust and press it into a 9-inch tart pan; set aside.

Step Two

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and stir for another minute.

Step Three

Add the Swiss chard to the skillet. Sauté until the chard is wilted and most of the liquid has evaporated, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from the heat and let the mixture cool.

Step Four

In a large bowl, combine the crumbled goat cheese, eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Mix until everything is well combined.

Step Five

Spread the cooled Swiss chard mixture evenly over the bottom of the tart shell. Pour the goat cheese mixture over the chard.

Step Six

Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the tart.

Step Seven

Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the filling is set and the top is lightly browned.

Step Eight

Remove the tart from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your Swiss Chard and Goat Cheese Tart!
