From the bold flavors of New England seafood, let’s take a delightful detour to something sweet and fruity, namely the Tayberry and Apple Pie, a recipe that I absolutely adore.

Delicious Tayberry and Apple Pie

I’ve always been a seafood lover, thanks to my Maine roots. But if there’s one thing that rivals the satisfaction of a good lobster roll, it’s the simple pleasure of a well-crafted pie. This particular recipe, the Tayberry and Apple Pie, caught my attention because of its blend of traditional apple pie charm and an unexpected twist – the wonderful taste of tayberries.

Tang of the Tayberry

The tartness of the tayberry works incredibly well against the backdrop of sweet, familiar apple. Tayberries are less common than many other berries – they’re a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry, imbued with a unique flavor that I find simply irresistible. Plus, tayberries provide a host of health benefits such as promoting good heart health, improving digestion, and being packed with antioxidants.

Looking for something to pair your Tayberry and Apple Pie with? Try a scoop of vanilla ice cream or perhaps a touch of homemade custard – both make perfect partners for this pie.

A Nod to Tradition with a Twist

This pie recipe does wonderfully well at capturing the essence of a traditional apple pie, while offering an adventurous twist. It’s the dessert you’ve always known and loved, yet an exciting novelty at the same time. I’ve found that it brings back fond memories of the apple pies my daughters, Erin and Samantha, love; it’s familiar but just different enough that it sparks curiosity.

Together, the unassuming apple and tangy tayberry create an intriguing flavor balance. The tender apples provide a sweet counterpoint to the tangy, aromatic tayberries, with generous doses of sugar and cinnamon to enhance the symphony of flavors. The buttery, crumbly crust creates a delightful contrast in each bite.

So if you’re looking to venture outside of the comfort zone of your trusty apple pie, the Tayberry and Apple Pie is a truly rewarding endeavor.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 and 1/2 cups of sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 cups of tayberries
  • 2 cups of peeled and sliced apples
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour

ALLERGENS: Gluten, Dairy, Egg

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Combine 1 cup of sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl. Add the tayberries and apples and toss to coat. Drizzle with lemon juice, mix well and set aside.

Step Two

In another bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, remaining 1/2 cup of sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.

Step Three

Add the softened unsalted butter and shortening to the flour mixture. Blend together until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step Four

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, vinegar, and vanilla extract. Gradually add this mixture to the flour-butter mixture, stirring just until moistened.

Step Five

Pour berry-apple mixture into a greased pie dish. Pour the topping evenly over the fruits, spreading it gently to cover.

Step Six

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbling. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
