A Love Letter to Tomatillo Guacamole
As a New Yorker, I’ve come to appreciate the immeasurable diversity and rudiments in our culinary scene – and nothing personifies that melting pot quite like a refreshing bowl of Tomatillo Guacamole. This green-hued, vibrant dish packs in flavors and textures that seem to echo the dynamism of the city, from the subtle sweetness of the tomatillo, to the creamy richness of ripe avocados, to the kick of jalapeno pepper.
The Spark that Ignites the Bonfire
While it seems like a simple dip on the surface, I’ll tell you what I like the most about this Tomatillo Guacamole – it’s a culinary chameleon. It’s the perfect partner for your traditional tortilla chips sure, but it also works wonders with a variety of dishes. Top off your grilled chicken with it, or spread it on a slice of warm, toasted bagel for an NYC twist. It even pairs brilliantly with a classic burger. Truly, its supportive and adaptive qualities remind me of how we, as actors, need to be flexible and diverse in our roles.
Not Just Pleasure, Also Health
Now, for those of you who love a good gastronomic adventure but are also keen on keeping things healthy – rejoice! This tomatillo guacamole doesn’t only taste phenomenal, but it’s also packed full of the good stuff. Those avocados? Great source of healthy monounsaturated fats. The limes? They’re bursting with vitamin C. And let’s not forget the tomatillos, with their decent dose of fiber, and the antibiotics present in garlic. I am thrilled that despite the hustle and bustle of city life, food like this can help maintain a healthy lifestyle.
A Recipe Close to My Heart
Being born and raised in New York means being exposed to a myriad of cultures, tastes, and textures. This tomatillo guacamole represents and respects that diversity. It’s more than just a recipe to me—it’s a dish that pays homage to the city I love and the different cultures that make it so unique. It is indeed a humble reflection of my own journey—from a stage, interacting with various roles, to my food blogging journey, interacting with various dishes. I just can’t express how much I love this versatile Tomatillo Guacamole recipe in words. Bon Appétit!
What You’ll Need
- 5 medium tomatillos, husked and rinsed
- 1 small onion, quartered
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 jalapenos, stemmed and seeded
- 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lime juice
- 1 cup cilantro leaves
- 2 ripe avocados, halved and pitted
- Salt, to taste
Method
Step One
Start by preheating your grill or broiler on high. Husk and rinse your tomatillos well, then place them in a grill basket along with the quartered onion, cloves of garlic, and jalapenos.
Step Two
Grill the vegetables, rotating them occasionally, until they are charred and softened. This should take around 10 minutes. Once done, remove them from the heat and let cool to a manageable temperature.
Step Three
In the meantime, zest your limes and squeeze out the juice, ensuring that you have about a 1/4 cup of fresh lime juice. Discard any seeds.
Step Four
Once the grilled vegetables have cooled, put them in a food processor along with the lime juice. Process until you have a slightly chunky puree.
Step Five
Add the cilantro leaves into the food processor and pulse until they’re finely chopped and mixed throughout the puree.
Step Six
Next, halve your avocados and remove the pits. Scoop out the ripe flesh and add it into the food processor. Process again until the mixture is smooth.
Step Seven
Taste the guacamole and season with salt according to your liking. Serve your Tomatillo Guacamole immediately with chips or your favourite Mexican dishes.
