Why I Love Italian Tuna Steak

From the moment I first savored a mouthful of my Nonna’s Tuna Steak, I knew there was something special about this dish. With each bite, I was transported to the sun-kissed shores of Italy, my senses swaddling in a tapestry of bold flavors as I indulged in this wonderful meal. Today, I find immense joy in sharing this family favorite with you, allowing you to experience the same delicious delight that has won over my heart.

Delicious Tuna Steak

A Culinary Connection to Italian Heritage

Rooted in Italian culinary traditions, my Tuna Steak is a wonderful representation of my Italian-American upbringing. Applying the fundamental principles I learned from my humble Italian roots adds a personal touch of authenticity and essence to this iconic dish.

Patterns of textures and flavors influenced by legendary chef, Lidia Bastianich contributes to its exquisite balance. Infused with garlic, dry white wine and a shot of citrus from the lemon, it becomes an aromatic symphony elevated further by capers, fresh oregano, basil, and parsley.

Perfect Pairings

Despite its distinctive character, the Tuna Steak’s complex profile of flavors offers unique compatibility with other dishes. Inspired by the coastal regions of Italy, pair this entrée with a side of Roasted Broccolini with Winey Mushrooms or toss a robust Panzanella Salad for an elevated dining experience.

In my personal repertoire of recipes handed down by my grandparents, this Tuna Steak certainly stands out. Not simply because of its delectable taste, but due to the comforting memories it stirs up. Every time I prepare this dish, I find myself reminiscing the unmistakable warmth of my grandmother’s kitchen where I ventured onto my culinary journey. Sharing it with you is like letting you have a little peek into my past, as we build our own family traditions, one plate at a time.

What You’ll Need

  • 6 tuna steaks
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh oregano leaves, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon capers
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 lemons, sliced for garnish
ALLERGENS: Fish, Garlic

Method

Step One

Season the 6 tuna steaks with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper evenly on both sides.

Step Two

Heat 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the seasoned tuna steaks. Cook each steak for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until it is cooked to your preferred level of doneness. Don’t overcook, as tuna can easily become dry.

Step Three

Remove the cooked tuna steaks from the skillet and set them aside. In the same skillet, add 2 minced cloves of garlic and sauté them until they start to brown. Be careful not to burn the garlic, or else it will become bitter.

Step Four

Pour 1 cup of dry white wine into the skillet with the garlic. Let it boil for a couple of minutes to let the alcohol evaporate. Then, add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh oregano leaves, 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh basil leaves, and 1 tablespoon of capers. Stir everything together.

Step Five

Return the cooked tuna steaks to the skillet and let them simmer in the wine and herb mixture for a couple of minutes, turning them occasionally to let them absorb the flavors.

Step Six

Remove the skillet from the heat. Garnish the tuna steaks with 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley and slices from 2 lemons before serving.

Step Seven

Enjoy your flavorful and aromatic Tuna Steaks with a side of your choice, such as sautéed spinach or roasted potatoes. The remaining sauce in the skillet can be drizzled over the steaks for additional flavor.
