As someone with a deep-rooted love for traditional Southern delights, I’ve always held a special place in my heart for our Vanilla Buttercream Frosting recipe. Filled with the rich indulgence that’s characteristic of Southern-American cuisine, it’s no surprise that people from all corners of the country – Southern or not – find it positively irresistible. The recipe borrows generously from my coastal culinary influences, making it the perfect balance of homey comfort and a light, luxurious touch.

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

A Love Letter to Tradition

Our Vanilla Buttercream Frosting is reminiscent of the sweet treats I grew up enjoying in the heart of Charleston. It’s a testament to how simple ingredients, when combined with a bit of Southern love and patience, can create something truly satisfying. The pure vanilla extract adds a hint of exotic aroma, evoking memories of far-flung islands and sunny beach days during the South Carolina summer.

Healthful Indulgence

Although traditional buttercream isn’t typically considered a health food, this recipe offers some unexpected benefits. The use of powdered sugar versus regular granulated sugar results in a smoother texture and a less intense sweetness, which may make portion control easier. Additionally, pure vanilla extract, as opposed to artificial alternatives, has potential health benefits ranging from heart health to mood improvement.

Standout in its versatility, the Vanilla Buttercream Frosting complements a range of recipes. It goes exceptionally well with a classic Southern red velvet cake or, for a coastal twist, try it as a topping on a zesty orange or lemon pound cake. The delightful pairing possibilities are endless, making this Frosting a staple in Southern baking.

It takes me back to the days spent in my mother’s kitchen, where love was poured into every recipe and each meal was a celebration. The Vanilla Buttercream Frosting is a little piece of my Southern heritage that I am delighted to share with you all. So, give it a try and experience the joy of baking with a timeless Southern classic.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons heavy cream
  • A pinch of salt
ALLERGENS: Milk

Method

Step One

Start by beating the softened unsalted butter on medium speed for about 2 minutes, or until it’s creamy in a large bowl.

Step Two

Gradually add the powdered sugar, about half a cup at a time, and beat at low speed until it’s fully incorporated. Make sure to scrap the sides of the bowl with a spatula when necessary to ensure everything gets mixed.

Step Three

After butter and sugar are mixed well, add in the pure vanilla extract and the pinch of salt. Continue to beat the mixture until these ingredients are well combined.

Step Four

Now, slowly add the heavy cream one tablespoon at a time, while the mixer is running on low speed. After all the cream has been added, turn up the speed to medium-high and beat for 1-2 minutes or until the frosting becomes light and fluffy.

Step Five

Your Vanilla Buttercream Frosting is now ready to use. You can immediately frost cakes or cupcakes, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator until needed.
