Why I Love Canadian Vegan Butter Tarts

As I unwrapped the mysteries of vegan cooking, one recipe that stirred my soul was the Vegan Butter Tarts. On a personal journey to embrace a more plant-based diet, I was on the lookout for treats that still capture the heartwarming feeling of traditional comfort foods. Being of rancher roots and entwined with Native American traditions, my culinary journey has always been a mixture of hearty meats and vibrant berries. Yet, exploring vegan alternatives brings a fresh wave of creativity and shows that we can celebrate flavors from every corner of the dietary spectrum.

A Tribute to Canadian Comfort Food

The Vegan Butter Tart is a quintessential Canadian dessert. As you melt the vegan butter and blend it with brown sugar and pure maple syrup, you can almost hear the giddy chatter of families gathering around the dinner table in their warm Canadian homes. While ordinarily, my cooking embraces the rustic richness of meats like bison and venison, this vegan recipe opens a delicious door to inclusivity. These tarts, with their golden crust, gooey filling, and plump raisins, offer comfort without compromising on the ethics of veganism.

Inspired by the Best

I’ve always admired the prowess of Isa Chandra Moskowitz. An acclaimed vegan chef, her innovative approach to vegan cuisine was indeed a thought-sparker. It taught me that vegan recipes could be about more than just salads and smoothies. Case in point: these scrumptious Vegan Butter Tarts.

The Perfect Accompaniment

Paired with a steaming cup of coffee or a delicate herbal tea, these sweet, luscious tarts become a warm hug on a cold day. What’s more, they complement my special Huckleberry Pie with their delicate sweetness and soft texture. So as you navigate vegan culinary waters, remember: it’s all about translating familiar comforts into an ethical palate. And believe me, with recipes like these Vegan Butter Tarts, the journey will be as satisfying as it is meaningful. Enjoy every bite!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 vegan pie crust
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup of vegan butter
  • 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed
  • 6 tablespoons of water
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of raisins
ALLERGENS: Depends on the specific brands and types of each ingredient used, especially for the vegan pie crust and vegan butter. These might contain: wheat, soy, nuts. It’s also important to note, some types of these products may contain traces of milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame. Please check brands’ individual labels for specific allergens.

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Roll out your vegan pie crust and cut it into circles. Consider using a cup or a glass. Then, push these dough circles into a muffin tray and set it aside.

Step Two

In a saucepan, combine the brown sugar, pure maple syrup, and vegan butter. Cook over medium heat, while continuously mixing, until the vegan butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved completely.

Step Three

In a separate bowl, mix ground flaxseed with water. Let it sit for a few minutes until it has thickened. This mixture will act as your ‘flax egg’.

Step Four

Add your ‘flax egg’ into the saucepan with your sugar and syrup mixture. Also add pure vanilla extract and salt. Mix until everything is well combined.

Step Five

Add raisins to the bottom of each of the pie crusts in your muffin tray. Then, pour over the mixture from your saucepan.

Step Six

Bake your butter tarts in the oven at the preheated temperature for 15 minutes, or until the pie crusts are golden and the filling is bubbling. Allow them to cool before serving.
