Why I Love British Vegan Tomato Basil Bruschetta
There’s something truly comforting about a classic dish, even more so when it’s vegan and bursting with flavor, just like this British staple, the Vegan Tomato Basil Bruschetta. This simple yet hearty open sandwich is one that I hold near and dear, not just for its mouthwatering flavor but its versatility and visual appeal.
An International Influence
Though my heart belongs to the rich and vibrant flavors of Creole infused French desserts, I must confess I have strong gastronomic affections towards other world cuisine, and Britain’s bite-sized meals have a special place on my dining table. The Vegan Tomato Basil Bruschetta recipe is a perfect example. This humble dish bears a slight resemblance to the rustic French appetizer called Pan Bagnat, which is just like an open sandwich dressed in similar Mediterranean flavors. While bruschetta taps into my French culinary heartstrings, it suits my vegan lifestyle to a tee, while keeping its robust and savory appeal.
A Nod To A Culinary Genius
I can’t talk about this recipe without giving credit to Jamie Oliver who has showcased countless variations of the iconic Bruschetta. His approach to fresh, simple ingredients, and easy-to-follow methods was a major influence as I developed this recipe.
The Perfect Partnership
Without a doubt, the Vegan Tomato Basil Bruschetta is a delicious masterpiece on its own. However, it has a unique ability to compliment other dishes, as a starter or a side. For instance, a light yet hearty bowl of Monkfish with Pea and Mint or a serving of Veggie Roast would beautifully mirror the bright and rustic flavors of Bruschetta in a meal.
Whether it’s a casual brunch, a family dinner, or an elegant vegan party, my take on the Vegan Tomato Basil Bruschetta is a palate pleaser that knows no boundaries. It’s my love for this recipe that inspires me to share it with you, just as I continue to share my passion for food from a wide spectrum of culinary worlds.
What You’ll Need
- 6 slices of crusty bread
- 4 ripe large tomatoes
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1 large bunch of fresh basil
- 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
- 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar
- Salt and pepper to taste
Method
Step One
Start by preheating the oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the slices of crusty bread on a baking tray and let them crisp in the oven while you prepare the bruschetta topping.
Step Two
Chop the ripe tomatoes into small cubes, making sure to remove the seeds. Also, finely chop the fresh basil leaves. You can save a few whole ones to garnish the bruschetta before serving.
Step Three
Peel the garlic cloves and chop them finely. In a bowl, mix together the chopped tomatoes, garlic, and basil. Add the two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and the teaspoon of balsamic vinegar. Season with salt and pepper according to your taste.
Step Four
By this time, your bread slices should be crispy. Take them out of the oven and let them cool for a bit. Then, top each slice with the prepared tomato, garlic, and basil mix.
Step Five
Return the bruschetta to the oven and bake for another 2-3 minutes, just enough to warm the topping. Watch it closely to avoid burning the bread.
Step Six
Finally, take out the Vegan Tomato Basil Bruschetta from oven. Garnish with the saved basil leaves and serve immediately.
