As a Southern belle deeply steeped in food traditions, I’ve always had a special fondness for dishes that weave together rich flavors, lingering textures and simple roots. Just like the timeless wave I’ve come to know and love while surfing the Charleston coastlines, there’s something purely mesmerizing about the Vegetarian Tree Onion and Spinach Tart. It’s a vibrant, robust vegetable-based dish that beautifully marries humble ingredients with a dash of sophistication, transcending geographical boundaries and dance gleefully on your palate.

Layers of Flavor and Wholesome Goodness

The distinct sweetness of tree onions, also known as Egyptian walking onions, harmoniously melds with fresh spinach’s earthy notes, making it a worthy centerpiece in this savory tart. The richness of the cheeses, aromatic garlic undertones, and extra virgin olive oil’s whispering finish result in a flavor profile that can only be characterized as sublime whilst the two eggs give it an eggy texture that is pleasantly light. It’s a dish that manages to be hearty without being too heavy, much like the best Southern biscuits I’ve come to perfect.

Healthful, Delicious and Unforgettable Journey

Essentially, this Vegetarian Tree Onion and Spinach Tart is not just an ode to the love of fresh ingredients but also a testament to the health benefits they offer. Spinach, for instance, blesses the dish with its hefty vitamin content. The tree onions, meanwhile, are known for their sulphur compounds that have impressive health benefits. It’s a feast that both your taste buds and body will thank you for.

If you’re fond of hearty tarts like spinach and feta tart, you’ll surely find this recipe equally endearing. Better yet, serve it alongside a fresh garden salad or a bowl of homemade soup for a well-rounded meal. Simply put, our Vegetarian Tree Onion and Spinach Tart is inviting comfort in every bite, radiating warmth much like our beloved Southern tradition.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry
  • 2 cups of tree onions (also known as Egyptian walking onions), finely sliced
  • 3 cups of fresh spinach leaves
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup of ricotta cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup of whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
ALLERGENS: Gluten, Dairy, Eggs

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Unroll your puff pastry and press it into a tart pan, discarding any excess. Set aside.

Step Two

In a pan, heat your olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté until it becomes fragrant.

Step Three

Add the sliced tree onions to the pan with the garlic, continue sautéing until they become soft and caramelized. This should take about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Step Four

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sautéed onions and garlic with the fresh spinach, ricotta cheese, and half of the cheddar cheese.

Step Five

In another smaller bowl, whisk together the two eggs and the whole milk. Pour this mixture over the onion and spinach mixture in the larger bowl, stirring thoroughly to combine.

Step Six

Pour the entire mixture onto the prepped puff pastry in the tart pan, spread evenly with a spatula. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top.

Step Seven

Place the tart in the oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when the filling is set and the cheese on top has turned a beautiful golden brown.

Step Eight

Remove the tart from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Slice and serve warm. Enjoy your Vegetarian Tree Onion and Spinach Tart!
