A Fusion of Midwestern and French Cuisine

Built on the simplicity of Midwestern-style cooking and bearing a close resemblance to classic French gratins, this dish echoes the sentiment where homeliness meets sophistication. Akin to our familiar scalloped potatoes, the Walla Walla Sweet Onion and Potato Gratin recipe elevates the mundane into the realm of gourmet with its supremely cream-laden body and delicate layers of sweet onion and potato, all topped with a layer of golden-brown Gruyère cheese crunch.

Endless Reasons to Love this Recipe

Savoring the amalgamation of flavors is just half the pleasure. This Walla Walla Sweet Onion and Potato Gratin also packs a power punch of vital nutrients. The sweet onions are a solid source of Vitamin C, fiber, and folic acid, while Yukon gold potatoes offer potassium and Vitamin B6. What You’ll Need

  • 3 large Walla Walla sweet onions, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1.5 pounds of Yukon gold potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup grated Gruyere cheese
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
ALLERGENS: Milk, Cheese, Butter, Garlic, Wheat

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and generously grease a 9×13 baking dish with some of the unsalted butter. Set it aside.

Step Two

Melt the remaining butter in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the Walla Walla onions and cook them until they become translucent, stirring occasionally. This should take about 10 minutes. Add in the minced garlic and cook for another 2 minutes, until it is fragrant.

Step Three

In a large bowl, combine the sautéed onions and garlic, sliced Yukon gold potatoes, heavy cream, Gruyere cheese, salt, freshly ground black pepper, grated nutmeg, and chopped fresh thyme. Stir the ingredients thoroughly until they are well combined.

Step Four

Transfer this mixture into your prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly and pressing it down so that it is flat. Cover the dish with foil and place it into your preheated oven. Bake for about 40 minutes.

Step Five

While the gratin is baking, combine the breadcrumbs and olive oil in a small bowl. After 40 minutes, remove the foil cover from the gratin and sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top. Return the dish to the oven, uncovered, and bake for another 15-20 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender.

Step Six

Let the gratin cool slightly before serving. It can be served both hot or at room temperature. Enjoy your Walla Walla Sweet Onion and Potato Gratin!
