Welsh Onion and Cheese Tart

There’s something deeply comforting about the Welsh Onion and Cheese Tart. This recipe, filled with the rich, savory flavors of cheddar and Gruyere cheeses, paired with the subtle sweetness of Welsh onions, beckons to those craving a taste of home. Whether I’m winding down after a day of hiking in the Rockies or just looking to create a cozy dinner for Gordon and me, this tart never fails to bring warmth and satisfaction.

The Uniqueness of Welsh Onions

Why focus on Welsh onions or green onions? These ingredients add a delicate touch, differentiating this tart from the standard fare. Rich in vitamin C and containing antioxidants, onions are not just flavorful but also come with health benefits. They support your immune system and can help reduce inflammation, making this dish not just delightful to your taste buds but also nourishing for your body.

A Hearty Yet Elegant Option

The Welsh Onion and Cheese Tart holds a special place in my collection of recipes because it perfectly balances heartiness and elegance. The heavy cream and eggs provide a luscious, creamy texture, while the nutmeg adds a hint of warmth, making it perfect for chilly mountain nights. It’s reminiscent of quiche and can be a fantastic addition to a brunch spread or a sophisticated dish for a dinner party. If you’re looking for dishes to pair this with, consider a side of roasted root vegetables or a crisp, green salad to balance the richness.

Many of us look for meals that can serve multiple purposes, whether as a main dish or a delightful accompaniment. Similar to a classic French quiche or even a savory pie, this tart’s versatility allows it to fit into countless meal plans. If you’re a fan of the smooth, cheesy texture found in dishes like a Croque Monsieur or an Alsatian Tarte Flambée, you’ll find a lot to love in this tart.

Finally, don’t just take my word for it—try making the Welsh Onion and Cheese Tart your own. Experiment with different cheese combinations or even add some fresh herbs for a personal touch. It’s recipes like these, simple yet profoundly satisfying, that keep me passionate about cooking and sharing these creations with you.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 pre-made 9-inch pie crust
  • 2 cups thinly sliced Welsh onions (or green onions)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Milk, Eggs

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Take the pre-made 9-inch pie crust and gently press it into a pie dish. Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork to prevent it from bubbling up during baking. Place the pie crust in the oven and pre-bake for about 10 minutes until it starts to turn golden. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool slightly.

Step Two

In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the thinly sliced Welsh onions (or green onions) and sauté for about 5-7 minutes until they are softened and slightly caramelized. Remove from heat and let them cool slightly.

Step Three

In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded cheddar cheese and shredded Gruyere cheese. Spread half of the cheese mixture evenly over the bottom of the pre-baked pie crust.

Step Four

Spread the sautéed Welsh onions evenly over the cheese layer in the pie crust. Then, sprinkle the remaining cheese mixture over the onions.

Step Five

In another bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, eggs, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg until well combined. Carefully pour this mixture over the layered cheese and onions in the pie crust.

Step Six

Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, until the filling is set and the top is golden brown. Allow the tart to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your Welsh Onion and Cheese Tart!
