What’s a Southern belle to do when the coastal sun blazes hotter than a skillet of fried chicken? Why, she whips up a refreshing, fruity concoction, of course! Allow me to introduce one of my favourites; the Sarguelas Smoothie. Bright, flavorful, and packed with nutritious components, this smoothie is my go-to when I need a quick pick-me-up after a day of catching waves.

Sarguelas Smoothie

A Refreshing Blend of the Tropics

Sarguelas, also known as Spanish plums, reign as the stars of the Sarguelas Smoothie. These fruits are a perfect representation of my love for food that’s not only delicious, but also beneficial to our health. Bursting with Vitamin C, they provide your immune system with a nice boost, and their richness in dietary fiber aids digestion. Then, the bananas and fresh orange juice bring in hints of comfort from our traditional Southern fruit salads.

A Companion to Every Meal

And let’s not forget the versatility of this lovely beverage. While it’s nourishing enough to stand alone as a light breakfast, it also pairs beautifully with various dishes. Try it with a plate of buttermilk biscuits or a hearty chicken salad for lunch. It adds a bright note to any meal, much like a classic Southern sweet tea.

For an enchanting summer dinner at the porch, you could serve the Sarguelas Smoothie alongside a seafood dish. It goes spectacularly well with shrimp po’ boys or classic Lowcountry boil. The lightness of the smoothie complements the spices and flavours, managing to cleanse the palate in between bites while simultaneously enhancing the savory elements of the seafood.

Customizing Your Sarguelas Smoothie

Another reason I adore this smoothie is its flexibility. You can adjust the recipe according to your taste or dietary needs. Use a plant-based yogurt to make it dairy-free, or add in a scoop of protein powder for an after-workout boost. Add chia seeds for some extra fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, or top it with mint leaves for an extra dash of freshness. I find that adding a touch of local honey not only sweetens the smoothie but also ties me closer to home, where honey is more than just a condiment—it’s a testament to Southern hospitality and the pastoral, natural beauty of Charleston.

Whether you’re from the South or somewhere else entirely, the Sarguelas Smoothie is a delightful, healthy recipe that brings a piece of the tropics to your kitchen. So, go on and give it a whirl. I believe it’ll charm you just as much as it did me.

What You’ll Need

  • 3 cups sarguelas fruit, pitted and chopped
  • 2 bananas, sliced
  • 2 cups fresh orange juice
  • 1 and 1/2 cups Greek yogurt
  • 2 tbsp honey or to taste
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds (optional)
  • Mint leaves for garnish (optional)
ALLERGENS: Bananas, orange juice, Greek yogurt, honey, chia seeds

Method

Step One

Prepare all your ingredients. Pit and chop the sarguelas fruit, slice the bananas, and squeeze enough oranges to get 2 cups of fresh juice.

Step Two

Place the sarguelas fruit and bananas into a blender. Pour in the fresh orange juice over the fruits.

Step Three

Add in the Greek yogurt and honey to the blender, adjust the amount of honey according to your preference for sweetness.

Step Four

Put in the ice cubes to the blender. This will give your smoothie a refreshing, chilled touch.

Step Five

If you want a further boost of nutrients, sprinkle in chia seeds. This step is optional and you can skip it if you prefer.

Step Six

Blend everything together until smooth and creamy, with no large chunks remaining.

Step Seven

Pour the smoothie into glasses. If you want, garnish each glass with a sprig of mint for an extra pop of colour and freshness.

Step Eight

Serve the Sarguelas Smoothie cold and enjoy!
