Blackberry Jam

A Love Letter to Simplicity

Sometimes, the simplest ingredients yield the most exquisite flavors. The Blackberry Jam embodies this idea wholeheartedly. With just a few key ingredients, this recipe produces a symphony of flavors that sings of summer afternoons spent picking berries in the fields. Bursting with the juicy sweetness of fresh blackberries, the tang of lemon juice, and the subtle crispness of sugar, this jam is a testament to the power of purity in cooking.

A Healthy Indulgence

But there’s more to this recipe than mere flavor — it’s also a healthful addition to your diet. Blackberries are a great source of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, helping to support heart health and enhance skin vitality. The lemon provides a dose of immune-boosting Vitamin C, while the minimal amount of sugar and butter help to keep things indulgent yet guilt-free.

Unlike other, more processed types of jams, this homemade recipe lets the natural sweetness and nutritional advantages of the blackberries shine through. It’s not just a jam, it’s a love letter to simplicity, to health, and to indulgence.

Pairs with Pleasure

The versatility of Blackberry Jam is yet another reason why it has a special place in my culinary heart. Its superb balance of sweetness and acidity lets it blend seamlessly with a swathe of dishes. Enjoy it spread over warm toast for breakfast, spoon it over yoghurt for a midday snack, or use it as a filling for luxurious Victoria sponge cake. Just imagine the burst of berry goodness with each bite!

With a jar of this homemade blackberry jam in your refrigerator, you hold a ticket to an array of delightful, delicious, and healthy culinary adventures. This is one decidedly simple and yet profound joy that my Midwestern roots have gifted me. I hope it brings the same joy to your kitchen.

What You’ll Need

  • 4 cups of fresh blackberries
  • 2 cups of white sugar
  • 1/4 cup of lemon juice
  • 1/2 package of powdered fruit pectin (about 0.8 oz)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of butter
ALLERGENS:

Method

Step One

First, take the 4 cups of fresh blackberries and mash them in a saucepan. You can use a potato masher or a fork to do this until it forms a pulpy texture.

Step Two

After the blackberries are mashed, stir in 2 cups of white sugar and 1/4 cup of lemon juice into the saucepan. Mix these together well.

Step Three

Next, heat the mixture over medium heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. This usually takes about 5 minutes. Make sure to stir frequently to avoid any burning at the bottom of the saucepan.

Step Four

Once the sugar is dissolved, mix in 1/2 package of powdered fruit pectin and 1/2 teaspoon of butter. The butter helps to minimize foaming. Continue to stir until these are well incorporated with the blackberry mixture.

Step Five

Bring the mixture to a full rolling boil over high heat, stirring constantly. Let it boil hard for 1 minute, then remove the saucepan from the heat.

Step Six

Finally, carefully ladle the hot jam into sterilized canning jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace at the top of each jar. Wipe the rim of the jars clean and seal tightly with lids. Process in a boiling water bath for 5 minutes to fully seal and preserve the jam.

Step Seven

Once done, let the jars cool to room temperature. Check the seals and then store in a cool dark place. Your homemade blackberry jam is now ready to be served.
