Driven by the Blend of Cultures in My Kitchen

Being a Louisiana native with French ancestry, my kitchen enjoys a blend of the richness of Creole cuisine, and the elegance of French. This constantly drives me to try an array of recipes, pushing boundaries of taste and texture. In this dish, I found a nice liaison between my love for fresh vegetables and the bold flavors that typically resonate with my culinary heritage.

An Unexpected Health Champion

What makes this stir-fried burdock with carrots and sesame recipe even more appealing are the health benefits that it goes hand in hand with. Burdock root, a beloved staple of Asian cooking, isn’t just delicious but also well known for its potential medicinal purposes including blood cleansing and skin health benefits. Likewise, carrots are a well-documented source of essential vitamins, and sesame seeds add a nice dash of healthy fats and minerals to your diet.

A Versatile Side Dish

Stir-fried burdock with carrots and sesame quickly fits into your meal planning because it pairs well with many main courses. It’s a lovely accompaniment to roasted meats, tofu stir-fry, even works as a refreshing contrast to spicy dishes. You don’t need to take my word for it, though. Try it out for yourself, and let this be the magic touch at your next dinner.

Let’s not forget, the fact this recipe is vegan-friendly, gluten-free, and fits into the “Clean Eating” mantra makes it perfect for virtually all diet ideas. Regardless of your dietary preferences, it adds balance and delight to the plate and perfectly showcases my ethos of giving traditional recipes a fresh, modern twist. And who knows, perhaps it will also inspire you to add your own spin to this recipe.

What You’ll Need

  • 3 medium-size burdock roots
  • 2 large carrots
  • 3 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons white sesame seeds
ALLERGENS: sesame oil, soy sauce, sesame seeds

Method

Step One

Begin by preparing the vegetables. Firstly, peel the burdock roots and carrots. Then slice them into matchstick sized pieces. Make sure the pieces are similar in size to ensure even cooking.

Step Two

Heat the sesame oil in a large, deep pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger into the pan and sauté for about one minute or until they release their aroma.

Step Three

Add the carrots and burdock roots to the pan. Stir-fry the vegetables for approximately 5 to 7 minutes, or until they begin to soften and become slightly golden.

Step Four

In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, and water. Pour this mixture over the stir-fried vegetables. Simmer for about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure all the vegetables are coated in the sauce.

Step Five

Finally, sprinkle the white sesame seeds over the stir-fry. Stir well to evenly distribute the sesame seeds throughout the dish. Continue to cook for another minute, then remove the pan from the heat. Your Stir-fried Burdock with Carrots and Sesame is now ready to be served.
