Citrus and Herb: A Perfect Marriage

Welcome to the intersection of rustic charm and elegant finesse—where the Tangerine and Thyme Martini holds court. I’ve always been fond of celebrating the sensibilities of my French-Creole heritage, and this recipe does just that, echoing the sweetness and heat of Louisiana, while paying homage to French cocktail traditions. The addition of vodka adds an undeniable oomph, its discreet sugarcane essence blending seamlessly with the tangerine and thyme.

If you adore the invigorating taste of a Classic Screwdriver or appreciate the harmonious blend of herbs and citrus in a Gin and Tonic, the Tangerine and Thyme Martini is your next cocktail revelation.

Fresh Tangerines, Better Health

But as delicious as this cocktail is, its merits aren’t limited to its taste. You’ll be pleased to know that the hero ingredient—tangerines—packs quite a nutritional punch. Rich in immune-boosting vitamin C and fiber, tangerines are a perfect balance of taste and nutrition, adding a zing to the drink while doing wonders for your health. The addition of fresh lemon juice not only imparts a zesty tang but also adds its own share of vitamin C and digestion-promoting properties.

As for thyme—an often underestimated herb—it comes with an impressive list of health benefits. Bursting with antioxidants, it’s great for improving digestion and boosting immunity.

What You’ll Need

  • 12 fresh tangerines
  • 2 cups of good quality vodka
  • 1/2 cup of fresh thyme leaves, plus extra sprigs for garnish
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice
  • Crushed ice
ALLERGENS: None

Method

Step One

Start by washing the tangerines thoroughly. Once they’re clean, peel them and remove any seeds. Place the tangerine segments in a large glass bowl or jar.

Step Two

In the same jar, add 2 cups of vodka, ensuring all the tangerine segments are submerged. Cover the jar tightly and place it in the fridge. Allow it to infuse for about one to two days.

Step Three

After the vodka and tangerine have infused, it’s time to make the thyme syrup. Place a saucepan over medium heat and pour in the water and sugar. Stir until the sugar completely dissolves. Add the half cup of thyme leaves and continue stirring for a few more minutes. Remove from heat and allow this mixture to cool.

Step Four

Once the thyme syrup has cooled, strain the leaves, reserving the syrup. Now, take the vodka-tangerine infusion out of the fridge and strain away the tangerine segments. Combine the infused vodka, thyme syrup and fresh lemon juice in a large pitcher.

Step Five

Fill a glass with crushed ice. Pour in the tangerine and thyme mixture. Garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh thyme and enjoy your Tangerine and Thyme Martini!
