The Inspiration Behind Yogurt-based Soursop Shake

Every cuisine tells a story, a narrative that is often woven deeply into the fabric of a culture, defined by geography, rich history and personal experiences. One of my go-to recipes on a warm summer day is the Yogurt-based Soursop Shake. This humble recipe marries the delicate flavour profiles from my Gujarati roots with a tropical enthusiasm inherent of my Californian upbringing.

Imagine pure, juicy soursop pulp blended perfectly with a creamy swirl of yogurt, then topped off with a drizzle of luxurious vanilla extract. It’s an indulgence without the guilt, a nod to a healthier lifestyle without compromising taste. The aroma hits you first, a symphony of sweet and tangy, promising a layered experience of flavour. This is more than just a refreshing beverage. It’s almost like a liquid dessert that you can sip slowly, letting the diverse flavours swirl around on your tongue.

Refreshing Yogurt-based Soursop Shake

Fusion and Versatility at its Best

The Yogurt-based Soursop Shake mirrors my approach to fusion cuisine – flavourful and fresh with a twist. Notably, it’s reminiscent of the traditional Indian lassi, a popular yogurt-based drink which is a familiar household treat. It also shares a kinship with the iconic Californian smoothies, flexible to a variety of fruits and with an undeniable focus on health benefits. It’s also a great accompaniment for light meals such as Tabbouleh salad or vegetable spring rolls.

Enjoy a Wealth of Health Benefits

As gratifying as this fusion delight is, I find it equally important to celebrate its bounty of health benefits. Soursop, also known as Graviola, is a powerhouse of nutrients. This tropical fruit is rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C, properties that can help boost immunity. Furthermore, the yoghurt in this recipe provides a beautiful creaminess while contributing beneficial probiotics and promoting gut health. I believe that magical moments in food come from balancing taste with nutrition, and this shake is a testament to that belief.

It is for these reasons, and many more, that the Yogurt-based Soursop Shake holds a special place in my heart and on my table. So, let’s toast to good health and great flavours – all in one glass!

What You’ll Need

  • 3 cups of soursop pulp (fresh or frozen)
  • 4 cups of plain yogurt
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • Ice cubes, as needed
  • Mint leaves for garnish (optional)
ALLERGENS: Milk, lactose

Method

Step One

Start by preparing the soursop pulp. If you’re using fresh soursop, peel it and remove the seeds. If you’re using frozen soursop pulp, allow it to thaw slightly for easier blending.

Step Two

In a blender, combine the prepared soursop pulp, plain yogurt, milk, sugar, and vanilla extract. Blend these ingredients until they are smooth and well mixed. You can adjust the amount of sugar according to your preference for sweetness.

Step Three

Once the shake is well blended, add in your ice cubes. You can put in as many as you prefer to achieve your preferred temperature and consistency. Then, blend again until the ice is fully incorporated and the shake is frothy.

Step Four

Pour the shake into glasses. If you would like, you can garnish each glass with a sprig of mint for an added touch of freshness and color. Serve immediately and enjoy!
